The ROCKing Art

In this modern world we all love to express our creativity through a numerous ways, some use their voice while some others utilize their body strengths as well as some use a canvas for the purpose.

But what if a tell you people express their skills upon rocks and turn ordinary looking stones into amazing structures, well you would say i'm talking of a talented sculpturist who carves out amazing stuff from rocks but what would you say if I show you this picture and say this was made as early as the 2nd century BCE

YEP, that's true !

Well the amazing stuff that you just saw is from one of the 30 such caves and they all together are called the Ajanta Caves situated in the Indian state of Maharastra.

It is really very fascinating to think of the craftsmen of that time as they raised certain sights which are so mesmerizing even at the present and that too during the era when almost no technological advancement happened. It's truly remarkable and a very great achievement for the artisans of India !

The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form.

UNESCO says that these masterpieces of Buddhist religious art that influenced the Indian art that followed and it is also regarded as a foundation for Indian art culture.

The caves were built in two phases, the first one being built in around the 2nd century BCE, while the second phase was built around 400–650 CE. The monument is a protected site in the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, and since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The remarkable feat that people achieved at that point of time and displayed loads of talent and putting all that together into the Ajanta Caves of today has attracted tons of people globally to witness this advanced stuff of the ancient era ;)
