Raj Kumar completed his graduation in 1938 from Agra University. In 1940, he obtained LLB degree in law. But he could not be admitted to a post-graduate degree in order to start his career. Raj Kumar started work as 'law officer' in the Christian Mica industry in Jharkhand. He retired as manager in the 1980s.
Raj Kumar's son Santosh Kumar retired professor. He was a teacher of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Patna. Santosh said, "We are very happy to fulfill Father's dream. At the convocation, the proposal was given to wheelchairs for my father's movement. Because he has trouble breaking the stairs. But with the help of one, the father walked to the stage He stood on his own feet and got the certificate. The Governor of Meghalaya, Ganges Prasad, praised my father. Nilanda Open University registrar SP Sinha said that this year, 22 thousand 100 students have been given different types of certificates. One of the 2,780 students invited to the convocation is Raj Kumar. He is the oldest person to obtain a postgraduate degree in this university.
