Are you looking for some recipes of delicious Indonesian Food? Then you are at the right place! Last July I visited with my friends the Balinese Farm Cooking School in Ubud and learned how to cook Indonesian Meals.
Today I want to show you the recipe of "Sweet Sour Tempe". In Bali I've eaten a lot of different styles of Tempe, but this one is absolutely my favorite! By the way Tempe is a traditional soy product originating from Indonesia. It is made by a natural culturing and controlled fermentation process that binds soybeans into a cake form.
So let's start with the recipe!
Main Ingredients:
- 1 Block Tempe (cut in long cube, about 1 - 2 cm - you can also use Tofu)
- 300 ml vegetable oil for deep frying
Fried Seasoning:
- 5 cloves of garlic (thinly sliced)
- 1 spring onion (thinly sliced)
- 2 pieces of long red chilies (thinly sliced)
- 1 tbsp. palm suger (or brown sugar)
- 2 bay leave
- 2 pieces juice of lime (squeezed)
- 2 tbsp. Coconut Oil
- 1/4 tsp. Salt
- 1/4 tsp. White Pepper
Steps to Cook:
(1.) Cut all ingredients (Tempe and all spices)
(2.) Heat Oil (medium flame) in as much 300 ml, and then deep fry tempe for next 8 - 10 min. or until golden browned (optional: add peanut/dried anchovies). Than strain until dry. Set aside.
(3.) Heat (medium flame) the coconut oil and then fry garlic until slightly brown color, than add in the spring onion, chilies, leaves, lemon grass, salt, pepper. Cook for about 30 seconds in low flame.
!
(4.) Add in the crumble brown sugar until melted, then Squish the lime juice and stir until well blended.
(5.) Add in the fried Tempe in the mixture (in low heat), stirring until Tempe absorb the seasoning (about 30 - 50 seconds).
(6.) The sweet sour Tempe is ready to be served.
Enjoy your Meal!
Please let me know if you want to try or if you already tasted it!

Some friends of me have been there before and recommended this school to me. I would chose the same cooking school again! I liked it a lot because you pick your own ingredients in their garden and they teach you a lot about them.
