5G and the ultimate "army in the middle" angst...

Yes, 5G is already rolled out in some spots over the globe and will start conquering the world starting in 2020 blowing away 4G like it was child play.

Check out what it's all about here -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5G

Most experts are sure that the features and capabilities will be needed in our upcoming industry 3.0 or was it 4.0?

Especially in fields like autonomous driving, streaming video everywhere and everything that's bound to transport a lot of data in a short time frame like traffic control systems and so on 5G is a must. Real time AI systems also are in need of high bandwidth for the massive data amounts they need to do their job.

To get sufficient 5G network coverage transmitter infrastructure must be tightly placed everywhere you want to make sure to have adequate bandwidth. Almost like every other block there will be transmission infrastructure needed.

At big scale for a city or a country there are big bucks to be made for the manufacturers of such infrastructure.

The biggest suppliers of 5G tech sit in China, the USA and in some niches in Europe too.

A big concern is security around this new tech. Especially the USA have started targeting Huawei for their effective support by the Chinese government and known interdependence with the Chinese intelligence services.

This is why, at least officially, the reason why Huawei is banne from the ongoing bidding processes and running construction work in regards to the US 5G rollout.

The US have been campaigning to get their "friends" in Europe to also make equivalent moves but it seems that the EU at least hasn't closed all the doors for Huawei in Europe... so far.

Check out this article from nakedsecurity.sophos.com about the status on this at the moment.

https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2019/12/10/eu-releases-its-5g-conclusions/

The officials of the EU also have concerns regarding security around the 5G rollout in Europe.

To me it seems the perfect, once in a quantum leap tech rollout, chance to get all your cyberwar tech placed for future use.

The tech also is pretty complex so hidden "intelligence features" wouldn't necessarily be detected by experts. Especially via the also needed maintenance of such systems any future firmware update or patch could potentially activate hidden eavesdropping features or aggressive, offensive cyberwar tech, so at least the concerns of many infosec experts.

So, what do you think?

Is it too dangerous to let Chinese government controlled tech mogul Huawei place tech in the new 5G infrastructure, or is this just an next level power move in the ongoing trade wars between the US, China and the EU?

Let me know what you think down in the comments!

Cheers!

Hi @doifeellucky

Well, my point of view as a user of such a backward technology as in Venezuela, anything above 3G is good.
Currently, to browse the internet from my home, I have to do it with the data provided by the service provided by the cell phone. That means that it is expensive and in Venezuela we are still very late, in that sense although it is true that many service operators offer 4G service that does not work very well and many times I only have 3G to make this comment, the first thing I did was see my connection from the cell phone and I saw that I was browsing with 3G.

That's why I said any connection above 3G is very good.

I hope that one day that type of 5G connection will arrive in Venezuela.

However I can tell you the communist criminals of the Venezuelan government, currently just to make war on the United States are doing business with Huawei for this company buy the national telephone company.

Cheers, Lanzjoseg

Hello @lanzjoseg!

Thanks for your comment! I hear you! If even the basic infrastructure is missing right now in Venezuela that's a problem on a whole other level!

Imho every country that let's 5G by Huawei happen must have a higher risk appetite/risk tolerance or does not care at all in the first place so much seems to be sure.

On the other hand much of the stuff we are fed with is propaganda. So, maybe it's just part of the ongoing trade war between the US and China that they target Huawei.

Technical it seems absolutely feasible to be concerned about privacy/intelligence tainted 5G infrastructure.

I didn't know about this technology. I really don't know if it already exists here in my country. I don't have a smartphone, just an ordinary phone.

I also didn't know the reason for Huawei's ban. I guess that's how they say around here: Every thief judges by their condition.

I wonder what the android phones are doing that we don't know about.

Thank you for sharing

Thanks for your comment! Well, there might be some merit to the "Huawei angst", Hahaha! There just too close to the Chinese government to dismiss the accusations of them rolling out cyberwar tech and even being payed for it.

In regards to Android, it's the most diversified mobile os which is a plus in regards to having a reduced attack surface when it comes to vulnerabilities and flaws. The many different flavors and open source underneath much of it are pretty sexy in that regard.

But, you never know! Hahaha!

Dear @doifeellucky

When I think about programs related to 5G and Climate Change ... I cannot help to think that global economy need them to stay strong within upcoming future.

Basically we need some large projects within new markets - new industries which will drive economic growth.

I'm myself worried about 5G since I've read number of publications explaining how little research has been done to predict impact of 5g antenas on humans. And those antenas need to be placed very close to each other (that's the specific of frequency being used by 5g).

Solid read. Upvoted already.
Cheers, Piotr
