Everything Is Possible | A Mindblowing Glimpse Into the World of "Free Soloing"

in inspiration •  6 years ago  (edited)

What is free soloing? Climbing mountains without the use of ropes or safety equipment.

Yes, you read that right.

To most people the idea sounds utterly insane or like something out of a Hollywood movie: Who in their right mind would voluntarily choose to not use potentially life-saving tools when attempting to climb in places where most people would be scared even with the help of climbing gear?

Well, people who are living life on the edge and cherish every second to the fullest in light of their constant dance with death.

Meet Alex Honnold

One of the most inspirational people I have heard about in recent years is Alex Honnold, probably the world's most successful free soloer who is still with us despite the odds.

Why is this man so inspirational to me? Because he is not governed by fear and his thoughts when he does what most people would never dare to imagine.

And thanks to advances in drone technology we have pristine footage of Honnold doing the unthinkable. We get to see him hang between the Earth and the sky using only his skill, climbing shoes and some chalk for a better grip.

So let me get this straight...

You have to understand that free soloers are not quite as irresponsible as it may first sound. While it is true that Honnold climbs the most insane obstacles without the use of ropes, a lot of preparation goes into his climbing route beforehand, which is a sight in and of itself: The mountain is painstakingly cleaned of loose rocks and weeds that could end the life of even the best climbers in an instant.

It will often take days or even weeks for Honnold and his helpers to make sure the route is as safe as possible before he drops the ropes and climbs the whole thing in one session. And all the preparation in the world cannot take away from how awe-inspiring and stunning it is to watch the man hang between the Earth and the sky with a smile.

Just watching it will trigger your brain's survival instincts

It is a real sight to see and can give us otherworldy amounts of inspiration to live a life of challenge, to overcome obstacles as a natural part of our life's unfolding, and to never get caught up in our heads when circumstances demand our clear and focussed presence in the moment.

There really is no point in me talking more about this: You have to see it!

Without further ado, here is Alex Honnold for you, one of my all-time champions when it comes to casting our doubts aside about what we can achieve and to never give up on making our dreams a reality.

Needless to say, but I feel compelled to say it: Unless you are an absolute world-class professional in climbing don't ever attempt this yourself!

Many free soloers have died in the process and all it takes is one wrong step for your life to end, even if you possess the highest climbing skills! Please take this dude's passion as mere inspiration to pursue your dreams ;)

shit dud this is not fore me am a can free clime on the ladder at work but 2 meters is my max lol...

I totally get ya ;)

"Just watching it will trigger your brain's survival instincts" Haha I get that feeling too. It is worse when you are actually up super high. There are some mountain near by and I would hike up to the top when I was in better shape (it is nothing near as extreme as this). Even when I knew I was safe and far from the edge, I would get sweaty palms and a racing heart.

Never been scared of heights but seeing Alex hang there when the wind is blowing is just so surreal. I would be scared because in that position I don't have the luxury of freaking out or stopping. It's a "climb or die" commitment and that seems too out of this world for me to even consider. Knowing "I CAN'T get worried or fearful" is what would make it so appealing for my mind to get scared in the first place.

A bad trip is bad enough trying to get away from myself, but that only takes part in the mind. This stuff here is literally physical.

Wish we had some mountains here... If there is a fence I generally don't mind extreme heights ;)

"A bad trip is bad enough trying to get away from myself, but that only takes part in the mind. This stuff here is literally physical." This kind of reminds me of a bit by the comedian Doug Stanhope. I can't remember which album it is from though. That is the truth though. I liked to hike up trails or at the most "crab walk" down a steep dry stream bed but when it comes to taking things to their extremes, I prefer to do it in my head lol.

The mountains in my area are pretty unimpressive as far as mountains go but they are still fun to go climb around on. You do have to watch out for snakes and there are a few mountain lions roaming around so you do take a kind of risk I guess. A lot of people go armed for that reason but I never did because the odds of actually being attacked by some dangerous animal are pretty low as long as you be careful about what you are doing. Plus, I would feel pretty terrible if I shot an animal. Then again, I might not think that if one was in the process of eating me lol.

We are so much alike in so many ways ;)

Climbing mountains without the use of ropes or safety equipment.

wow, nope, I would never do that, too risky and I have never been very good when trying to climb haha.

When I saw the movie Point Break a few years ago, they climb without ropes a famous mountain in Venezuela called Angel Falls, I thought this was impossible, but after seeing Alex Honnold I wonder if he can do it?

Never saw the movie. I might have to check it out, thanks!
There are many other climbs Alex has done since El Sendero Luminoso, I hope he will stay with us for many more decades ;)

This is insane!

I know, my body wants to get away from the screen just watching him do his thing. It's so awesome! ;)

I have sweaty palms just from watching this. I always wonder why some people can deal with heights and others not. Or even more strangely I am totally afraid of heights, but when I had to go on rooftops while working the fear was gone since I had a mission.

Good point, I guess he has a mission climbing up that thing ahahah.
I get afraid of heights the more I think about how easy it would be to just jump. And how irreversible.
I am not suicidal by any means, but there is a certain odd fascination with heights that makes it oddly enticing. So I try not to get up to heights without any fence ;)

Are you saying that there is a possibility that you would just jump? So yes please stay away from heights without a fence!

I love indoor rock climbing, but to imagine bouldering insane heights like that blows my mind! I forgot the name of the place in China, but there is a hidden village in the mountains that collects this certain rare herb and there is this teenage girl who climbs the route every day! It's crazy cool! I hope to achieve something so great as this one day :)

That sounds intriguing, never heard of her ;)

I feel you are well on your way. Relating to the digital realm you are probably one of the greatest people I have met, your life and your way of relaying your experiences seeds massive inspiration to others (me included), as well as your conscious decision to work on yourself tirelessly and to push through your roadblocks and hangups.
I really hope to meet you one day face to face my friend.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts <3

You've inspired me to share my voice on this platform and even brought more people to discover me. The feeling is almost like being on stage and it's massively nerve-wracking. I didn't think I'd get this far, but I'm doing it. I'm being the true me on a digital platform. You're on an amazing journey yourself! I'm sure our paths will cross some day. My passport needs more stamps around the world 😉
