About bihu

Bihu is a popular harvest festival celebrated in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. It is one of the most important festivals in Assam and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy.

There are three different Bihu festivals celebrated in Assam, namely Rongali Bihu, Kongali Bihu, and Bhogali Bihu, each with its own unique significance and rituals.

Rongali Bihu is the most important of the three Bihu festivals and is celebrated in mid-April to mark the beginning of the Assamese New Year. It is also known as Bohag Bihu and is celebrated over a period of several days with feasting, singing, dancing, and other cultural activities.

Kongali Bihu, also known as Kati Bihu, is celebrated in mid-October during the autumn season, and is primarily a somber festival that focuses on prayer and seeking blessings from the deities for a good harvest season.

Bhogali Bihu, also known as Magh Bihu, is celebrated in mid-January to mark the end of the harvesting season. It is a time of feasting and merrymaking, and people gather to share traditional Assamese delicacies and celebrate the end of the harvest season.

During the Bihu festival, people dress up in traditional Assamese attire and participate in various cultural activities such as singing and dancing to the beats of the dhol, playing traditional games, and preparing traditional Assamese dishes. The festival is a celebration of the rich culture and traditions of Assam and is a time for families and communities to come together and celebrate the joys of life.
