Believe or not there is a policy that covers kidnap & ransom (k&r) insurance. Each year, there are over 20,000 reported kidnappings across the globe and undoubtedly a small percentage isn't reported to the authorities. The majority of the victims are unsuspecting americans traveling around the world for business or just simply enjoying themselves on holiday unaware they are potential victims.
Policies start as little as $500 a year but for those who visit and frequent high risk areas, business, corporate, rich or famous, high flyers etc the costs sky rocket all depending on the individual. Other people are at risk such as aid workers and volunteers for charities, media people, journalists, reporters and many other general employees working all over the world in hostile places. Kidnap and ransom insurance protects individuals and corporations against financial losses that result from kidnapping, extortion and ransom demands. So be weary where you visit as these criminals are on the look out for people they can extort money somehow.
Concerning the rich and famous i presume they have their own security detail or hire bodyguards or protection services in a particular country. So there is a significantly reduced chance of getting kidnapped abroad also these high profile celebrities have the paparazzi following them constantly so this deterrent would hinder most kidnappers.
