The founding of the Church of Crete is attributed to the visit that Paul made to the island during his journey to Rome, to be judged by the emperor, after his three missionary trips. There Paul founded a small community which he left in charge of his disciple Titus. Later and probably settled in Rome, Paul addressed a very special letter to his beloved disciple, to affirm the principles of the faith, and so that the community would not fall into heresies, which were very common during the early church due to the influence of Gnosticism and the Greek philosophy.
In his letter and already with great experience on the subject, Paul taught his disciple how to preach the holy gospel to the unbelievers and the new christians, giving him a series of very simple recommendations to take into account in his dealings with others, as he explained in his letter:
"In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us" Titus 2:7-8.
With this Paul emphasized the importance of educating in the example of Christ with his spiritual gifts, avoiding gossip and scandals. Because scandals and gossip feed impiety, the hostility towards our neighbor, and the fruits of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21): "Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly" 2 Timothy 2:16-17.
The gospel must be taught with that wisdom that teaches the truth, corrects error, and admonishes with that mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) mingled with fear of God (firmness, constancy, devotion).
