Intel can not breathe in the last days. As if the problems with Meltdown and Specter vulnerabilities were not enough, a security researcher from Finland, F-Secure, has now discovered another ugly vulnerability that could potentially affect millions of corporate laptops. This time, the security bag is in Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), and can be exploited by hackers to take full control of the vulnerable device within a few seconds. What is important to note is that, unlike Meltdown and Specter vulnerabilities, successful exploitation of new vulnerabilities requires physical access to the device. However, it is nevertheless a critical vulnerability because hackers can compromise the system in less than a minute and then remotely control the device. It is pointed out that vulnerability can be exploited even when active protection measures such as BIOS password, BitLocker, TPM Pin or traditional antivirus. The BIOS password would normally be in charge of blocking malicious attacks, but Intel AMT opens the door with alternative attacks and remote management of the system. Intel has not responded to newly discovered vulnerabilities so far, and F-Secure recommends always looking at corporate laptops, and creating strong AMT passwords.
