So yesterday I got a message through my upwork profile about taking part in a research project as part of the Oxford internet institute which would end up taking me about twenty minutes to complete as a series of multiple choice questions for a bigger project regarding Skills formation and skills matching in online platform work: Practices and policies for promoting crowdworkers’ continuous learning.
Despite the rapid growth of online platform labour, little is known about how crowdworkers acquire and develop their skills. This project seeks to address this important gap in our knowledge.
It was straight forward, they placed the $9.50 in escrow until I completed the form, I let them know at the end of it I had completed it and they released the funds the next day, straight forward, easy to do and I got paid for twenty minutes of my time.
we have the tools to do the same
Although they used a platform called qualtrics there is no reason we can’t use some of the existing tools on the steem blockchain, we have the fantastic steemtaskr that could be used as well as platforms like dpoll too, alternative to this (outside the chain) we have options like typeform which provides a great experience for doing a form with all manner of programmable actions and outcomes.
what should we be asking
The more community groups we have, the more far flung the frontends become the more difficult it will be for people who get an account through a dapp to really keep up with what’s going on with the chain outside of the entry point of their signup — if we want people to invest and stay around we need to make sure they know what’s happening around the chain — I’m sure all frontends could come together on a unified format for this.
Online platform work is the world’s fastest growing form of employment. Last year the amount of work mediated by online platforms grew by 26%. In modern economies this is helping to accelerate a transformation from traditional employment to more flexible and, in many instances, more precarious digitally-enabled forms of work.
Like I would love to have seen a HF21 ‘questions and answers’ breakdown asking as many steemians as possible about their thoughts — that being said I think over time the different communities will give a richer picture as to there segment of the chain which has more value than just a one pass type form, I’d love to see how different dapp communities feel about certain major actions on the chain (I’m sure outside potential investors would like to see it also)
who funds this
Maybe this could be a research project that comes out of the new changes in HF21, would be great if someone picked this up and made it part of the regular marketing and outreach to existing and potentially future steemians, a ‘paid for answers’ type activity for maybe just a few steem or other tokens.
I left a section below with the site urls that were involved in this process if you want to check out more information about the project but from what I’m noticing I’m guessing that a lot of money is poured into these research projects from the government to communicate the sentiment in working in such platforms compared to your average 9-5 Joe — the funder in this instance was the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training and I’m sure there are more.
Maybe we need to be reaching out to these European Centres about developing an onboarding programme for the steem blockchain regarding communities and tokenomics?
