Keep your kids safe online, of all ages.

Hello to you.

I thought it would be important to share valuable tips on how to keep your children safe online. I think that most people in the world are very good people, but we all know that there are some bad people out there.

Children are going online at a very early age. They do not even realise that they are on the web. They know that they are watching YouTube but do not realise that they are connected to the Internet. Yet, on YouTube, they are able to like, unlike, subscribe and comment. This information is then online for eveyone to read.

A question I often ask children, is who is able to contribute to The Internet. They may say YouTubers or geeky guys with long hair and a cap. But the fact is, is that everyone and anyone can contribute to the Internet.

Therefore, it is important that children are aware of this and they (and of course the parents) are able to safeguard against the dangers of the Internet.

  1. For parents, make sure the computers are visible, i.e. in a living room or kitchen, so that you are able to see children’s activities.

  2. For children, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Be kind, always.

  3. Safety, don’t use your real name online. Whilst we are at it, don’t put your address, mobile phone number, name of your school or any football team that you play for. In fact, don’t give out any personal information.

  4. Meeting. Don’t EVER go and meet an online friend. If anyone asks to meet you, log off straight away and tell a family member. Don’t go, and worse still, don’t go and take a friend; they may get in trouble too.

  5. Access. Don’t open emails with attachments from people you do not know. It may contain a virus or a very nasty message which might upset you.

  6. Reliable. Is everything you see or read online reliable or trustworthy? No. Remember that it pretend to be something that they are not.

  7. Tell. Children should always tell a parent if anything upsets them or if they see anything suspicious online.

Those are the main tips for being safe online. Remember, the Internet can be great, but it has a dark side.

Feel free to add any more tips in the comments section.
