THE CAPAZ HOME FIRE

My name is Richard Capaz Carrera. I am 19 years old. I attend college and I am studying computer technology.
(Mi nombre es Richard Capaz Carrera. Tengo 19 años. Estoy ingresado en la universidad y estuido tecnología de computadores.)

I am a native of the community of Zoquitlán in the western Sierra Negra of Puebla, México. It is an indigenous area where the people speak Nahuatl. I live in a picturesque landscape with pine forests and fresh-water springs high in the mountains.
(Soy nativo de la comunidad de Zoquitlán por la Sierra Negra occidental de Puebla, México. Es un área indígena donde la gente habla Nahuatl. Vivo en un paisaje pintoresco con bosques de pino y manantiales de agua dulce, alto por las montañas.)

I speak Nahuatl, Spanish, and some English, but I had time to work on this text, so I can write better English than I can speak it.

There are 8 people in my family. My mother, Lupe, earns most of the family income by selling tamales. My father, Ubaldo, is a field worker, and the owner of our home. He speaks Spanish and Nahuatl, but not English. My sisters and brother are students. My older sister is in college studying business management. One other sister goes to preparatoria (junior college), two younger sisters are in secondary school, and my little brother goes to grade school.

El habla español y Nahuatl, pero no el inglés. Mis hermanas y hermano son estudiantes. Mi hermana mayor está en la universidad, estudiando el manejo de negocios. Una otra hermana va a preparatoria, dos hermanas menores están por la secundaria, y mi hermanito está en la primaria.)

In December 2017, a terrible tragedy completely changed our lives. A short-circuit started a fire, in our family home which we own. We all escaped unharmed, but all of our belongings, clothes, papers, money, furniture, appliances, all burned. This happened in the early hours of the morning.

(En Diciembre 2017, hubo una tragedia terrible que completamente cambio nuestras vidas. Un circuito corto empezó un fuego, en la casa familiar, lo cual somos dueños. Todos escapamos ilesos, pero todas nuestras pertenencias, ropa, papeles, dinero, muebles, electrodomésticos, todo quemado. Todo esto paso por la madrugada.)

That was a very difficult moment.

Right now, we all live together in a small corner of my grandmother’s home.
(En este momento, todos vivimos juntos en un pequeño rincón de la casa de mi abuela.)

I would like for my brothers, sisters, and I, to be able to continue with their schooling, but also to be able to rebuild our home, but better constructed. I would like for my parents to formulate a business for more income for themselves and for their children, and to continue forward in life, but we do not have savings or money to do all this. My parents already owed money paying for their children’s school. As it is, without help, it looks like we will need to stop schooling, and start a more difficult life.

(Me gustaría que mis hermanos, hermanas y yo podamos continuar con su educación, pero también poder reconstruir nuestro hogar, pero construirlo mejor. Me gustaría que mis padres formulen un negocio para obtener más ingresos para ellos mismos y para sus hijos, y que sigan adelante en la vida, pero no tenemos ahorros ni dinero para hacer todo esto. Mis padres ya deben dinero pagando por la escuela de sus hijos. Tal como están las cosas, sin ayuda, parece que tendremos que dejar de estudiar y comenzar una vida más difícil.)

To rebuild our home in a reasonable time we will need to hire some workers and buy materials. We also need money immediately to buy clothes and necessities, and later some more to buy some basic appliances and furniture. Any help you can provide would be like an angel from heaven.

También necesitamos dinero inmediatamente para comprar ropa y artículos de primera necesidad, y más tarde para comprar algunos electrodomésticos y muebles básicos. I made this page originally for GoFundMe.com, but I found out that they cannot help us unless we have a US bank account. We don’t even have a Mexican bank account. The banks in Mexico charge reverse interest to keep money in them, and the nearest bank is a difficult two hour journey from our mountain village.
