MY BACKGROUND AND WHY AM I IN LAW SCHOOL

I am happily married to a seafarer and we have a 2-year-old son. Currently, I am pregnant with our second child. We live in Quezon City, Philippines for three years now. I grew up in the province of Antique, Philippines and I spent my elementary and secondary education there.

I studied BA Political Science from the university and graduated last 2006. It was my initial plan to take up BS Accountancy but unluckily, when I filled out my UPCAT application form, I wrote the course BA Political Science as my first choice. I no longer bothered shifting to another course because of grade and requisites issues.

I went on with my course even though I didn’t have any certain concrete career plans. Fortunately, I finished it on time and with flying colors. As a Political Science student, I loved to study the flaws and promises of democracy. I also learned to admire the late Jessie Robredo’s governing style which has a thrust in grassroots participation. I hope that my foundation in Political Science has prepared me for law school.

I love reading books. Most of the time, I read fiction. I have read a lot of fictional books series from Nancy Drew, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, up to the Game of Thrones among others. But, most especially, I love to kill time by reading romantic novels. I can finish three to four romantic books in a week on top of reporting to work and taking care of my son. I guess I am a hopeful romantic. I hope that my love of reading will extend to the required reading materials in law school. My other interests include understanding cryptocurrency although I am a late bloomer to this matter as well as writing. To write and publish my own book is one of my dreams.

I started working in 2006 in a small trading and logistics company. I left it for a year to work for Robinsons Retail Group head office but, last year, realizing that my heart was for my first company, I decided to go back. My work exposures are into purchasing, merchandising and importation. My current immediate manager is almost like a father to me because of the length of service I spent with his company. I am expecting that my work experiences would help me easily grasp the impacts of law to real-life situations and processes.

I grew up unconsciously knowing that I have a heart for law school. My father used to say that becoming a lawyer had always been his dream. That is why when I was in college, when my father died, that dream was rekindled. I feel that by becoming a lawyer, it would be like reliving my father’s dream and his memory.
I have been working for ten years now and though I have been exposed to a lot of situations at work, I still desire for a tangible advancement in my career especially that I am not getting any younger anymore. I believe that I can achieve this aspiration by becoming a lawyer.

I want to have an impact on people’s lives and I want to be a more significant persona in our society. I believe that becoming a lawyer will certainly help me have these things that I envision to materialize. As the saying goes, ‘Perception is all there is.’ Lawyers are perceived as honorable members of the society and they are seen as experts of many things. I was totally thrilled that during our freshmen orientation, it was emphasized that it is the vision of this academe to produce great lawyers with a heart. I am hoping to be one in the future.
