I just spent an hour reading the SteemWhitePaper (https://steem.io/SteemWhitePaper.pdf) getting a feel for how this platform works, and I am thoroughly impressed. It creates the incentive for users to come up with truly valuable content, which in turn rewards the creators of said content with more influence over the community. It's a very simple and effective premise that drives healthy competition along with creativity and social networking. I see very little potential for abuse, as every vote cast represents a certain amount of credibility which diminishes rapidly if votes are given out too freely.

Welcome!

Just keep in mind that whitepaper is about 6 mths out of date with a few things, not everything but you have a good handle if you can read all of that!

There have been some huge changes, even recently.

If you search

#Steemit101 or Steemit 101 on here, you will find some basics I wrote, some even recently again the last 2 weeks, to help you.

There is definitely potential for abuse. We've had our fair share of drama over the last few months. I do think that it is mostly self-correcting though. It's just about giving the right incentives to not abuse things and decentralized policing in the cases where positive incentives are not enough.
