“OMG Heidi I’m freaking out! Where have you been anyway. I mean who up and takes off with their dad at our age? How weird?” Emily was excited and worried at the same time.
Heidi did’t know why Emily was so excited but she was about to feel an eerily familiar concern come over her.

“Im late Heidi, Im freaking late and I’m FA-REAK-ING out!”

“Duh you’re late, you were supposed to come over right after school. I have something to tell you….. and where the hell are you anyway?”

“Heidi no, I’m late late like….. late because you know …… I’m late!”

“Oh…. My....God…...Emily are you serious?” Heidi felt that eerie concern come over her.
“Where are you right now Em?”

Emily began to cry, “I’m at the store. Did you know there are twelve different brands of pregnancy tests at this one store? What am I going to do?” Emily was now sobbing.

“Em its going to be ok, all you need is one. Come over as soon as you leave there…..and only buy one!”

Emily arrived at the Lambrook’s in a panic. “Come on in Emily, Heidi’s in
her room”. Jim answered the door and Emily seemed to run right through him as if she didn’t even see him. She ran up the large hickory staircase into Heidi’s room where Heidi was ending a phone call…... “ok ok I know its hard to swallow, how do you think I feel?” She was visibly frustrated but instantly changed her expression when she realized Emily had entered the room.

“Hi”…….
“Hi” Heidi returned the hi Emily had entered the room with. Emily dumped a sack of pregnancy tests out on the bed. There were tests of all shapes and sizes. Twelve tests to be exact.

“I told you to just get one…..I mean... damn….. its not like you’re going to use this many pregnancy tests!”

“You’re right but what if one doesn’t work or I screw it up?”

“Em, you just have to pee on it….you have peed before right?”

“Duh I’ve peed before but usually not on a stick…...I mean…..I guess…..unless I’m camping or something!” Emily rolled her eyes and shook her head.

Heidi wanted to comfort her. She had not had a friend to comfort her with her pregnancy. It had all happened so fast. She made the decision to terminate her pregnancy very soon after she found out and she had only told her parents and one other person at this point.

“Em its going to be fine…….I know how you feel.”

“Heidi…. how could you possibly know how I feel?”Emily began to cry aloud.

Heidi ignored the question, “come on lets get your stick peed on.” The two girls huddled in the bathroom.

“Ok so why cant this stick just light up and say something like…...congratulations your the winner of a small newly developed child?”

“Oh no Emily you’re pregnant!” Heidi blurted it out when she saw the stick. Then she said to herself, “wow you probably could have been a little more tactful with that one Heidi.”

Emily looked at Heidi with tears welling up and said the same thing aloud….“you probably could have been a little more tactful with that one. I just don’t believe it. I’m going to try another one.”
