Introducing me, John and my story from special classroom, to living the dream.

in introduceyourself •  8 years ago  (edited)

Hi my name is John and I am 38 years old. I live in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. I grew up with what nice people would call a learning disability, others would label it much more offensively. It is called Dysgraphia, or for me difficulty making letters and words when I hand write.

I failed just about every essay based test I ever took because of it. Thank god I has some math skills and was great at multiple choice and memorization. Regardless, I was put in the special classroom. Eventually, computers saved me. The technology to type took away all my issues. Unfortunately, I went to grade school before computers were mainstream.

Towards then end of High School, I got a laptop; however, many educators did not trust me with it or like me using it as they thought I had an unfair advantage. Eventually I made it though high school and later undergraduate college with poor grades. I lived for 30 plus years believing in what others labeled me as. Despite it, I was always motivated and had a drive to succeed.

Work came easy, I just tried to be the best at every job I did. I ended up getting a lot of promotions and got involved in corporate legal department. Some lawyers said I was smart; overtime ,I began to believe them. I ended up taking the LSAT, law school entrance exam, and did pretty good (no writing, just multiple choice). Long story short, I received a great scholarship, even with terrible undergrad grades, and took the plunge despite my friends and family saying I would never make it.

Whelp, I proved them wrong. I graduated summa cum laude at law school, or top of my class. I have learned other people may label you, but don't be imprisoned by their views. I think they are only projecting or trying to make themselves feel better. I am now a successful practicing attorney and have found my calling. Life is amazing, for living in darkness most of my life, it feels amazing to be alive.

Now, I am having the time of my life. My drive and motivation got me here. This is a picture of me boating on one of our beautiful lakes. Now, I know its not other people that keep us down, but our own belief in ourselves. I learned to believe in me. People believe in me now, because I believe in myself.

After law school, I needed another challenge. Something people would doubt I could do. I felt the need to prove others wrong and expand my life experience. In early 2016, I found my goal. I wanted to be an IronMan. I paid my registration despite not owning a bike, not knowing how to swim, and barely being able to run more than five miles. In 6 months, I was an IronMan triathlete; swimming 2.4 miles, 112 mile bike ride, followed by a 26 mile run in a day. Now, I don't run fast, I fly low:

Life has been so good since I found myself and challenged myself. Money is no longer an issue. I can do all the adventures that I really want like skiing, traveling, and dining out. I even bought my dream rig, a brand new Toyota 4 Runner!

I am so happy to be here on steemit. My best buddy got me hooked on cryptos in late 2016 and I ended up having a hell of a return on ethereum in the first half of 2017. Listening to Jeff Berwick introduced me to steemit. I am so happy to be here. I look forward to growing in this community. I have no hard feelings or ill will towards any who labeled me growing up. I know that I have grown so much and it made me the man I am today. A man hungry with drive and motivation. This is the beginning of my story, and I cannot wait to write the rest of the chapters in my life. Thank you all for reading.

I leave you with a final picture of the sunset post IronMan.

What an inspirational story, @jrandolph! Welcome to Steemit.

Quite the journey so far bud.

Welcome this is an inspiring story, I can't say I've ever heard of this disability, but I had to immediately look it up. I'm sure like everything there are different degrees but I feel that I do have some of these similar traits. I was the only student that could not figure out how cursive worked and took lots of flack in school. I really feel that typing and computers have been a game changer for me.
