Hello Steemit, from a game developer

Hello Steemit,

IMG_4939.JPG

My name is Bram Stolk, and I develop indie games.
Ever since I got a home computer in 1982, I've been fascinated by writing computer programs.
To this day, it is still my number one hobby.

I grew up in Holland, but am now living in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.

During my life, I made many games but have a special interest in simulation games.
I like to write A.I. and Physics code, but do all the parts myself from start to finish, including my own engine.

If you have any questions about game development, I love to help out people if I can.

I like writing SIMD code with intrinsics, love the C programming language and Python too.
I wrote a primer on PID Controllers which are tremendously useful in game development.

I also wrote an Open Sourced AI software called General Purpose Goal Oriented Action Planning. It allows an AI to reason about the world and come up with a plan of actions to achieve a certain goal.
Personally, I find an AI that reasons about the world quite refreshing if you compare it to the recent hype of Deep Learning where massive data is thrown at a neural network, but there is never any real reasoning going on.

Don't hesitate to reply with any questions you may have.

Yours Sincerely,

Bram Stolk

Yay another game dev!
Hit me up on discord.
I not only make indie games but am also in the process of creating a new platform for indie devs also.
Would love to chat with you.

Welcome @mazarax! I'm sure you won't regret the time you will be spending here in stemmit, many lives have changed. You'll find out why. Have fun!

Welcome mate @mazarax! u got my upvotes and follow.

Welcome to the platform! Kate

Hey Bram, what program do you use to create your models for your games?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Hi, I use an Open Sourced modeller called Wings3D.
It's a truly amazing tool.

So easy to pick up, the basics are simple, yet it is very powerful.

It lets you do all sorts of operations on either vertices, edges or faces.

http://www.wings3d.com/

So yeah, my models tend to be simple and fall under what you would call "programmer art."
So sometimes, if I can't model it myself, I will occasionally buy a model.

Well, if you ever need some simple models done I can help you out for free! I’d love to help out with indie games :)

Hi Bram, I'd like to be your friend am an intermidiate web developer, I've modeled used Cinema4D and 3D Max I would like to learn from someone like you. Hope you follow me back. Welcome to Steemit!!!!

Hey Bram! Welcome to steemit community! We hope you're going to enjoy it. We hope you've heard about utopian.io, if not, check it out. It's a steem based paltform for programmers. Good luck and steem on!

Thanks, I had not heard of this before, but it sure is an interesting concept.
I may try it out, if there is a good match.

So I am confused. Before using utopian.io I have to give it all sorts of privileges over my steemit account? I don't want others to have the right to vote/comment/delete for me.

It is absolutely safe to use it. Make your research about utopian.io, there's plenty of articles about it here on steemit.

With all due respect, I see no explanation on why utopian.io asks for these permissions. Neither the utopia.io site, nor your reply gives a rationale for requesting these permissions.

I'm not using this platform myself, but i know that it is growing greatly and that many people are using it, because it it pays well to those who contribute to it. Join their discord channel and maybe get more info there.

Welcome to steemit!!! @mazarax , this is an incredible platform and I know you will be very good here, I invite you to see my blog! @myperfectblog

A game developer on Steemit sounds great :)
I wish you a great journey here :)

Im learning game dev myself. Im always down to hear about how different peoples dev process happens! Welcome and enjoy!

Haha, love the spelling error in your verification picture, makes it unique somehow :D As a game developer, maybe you got confused with the platform STEAM. This is STEEMIT.COM based on the STEEM blockchain, confusing, right?

Maybe you should check out @utopia-io, it's a platform rewarding open source contributions - Maybe for games as well ;)

Resteemed you via @welcoming, my page for sharing promising newcomers! Greets!

Thanks Austrian guy. I visited Austria a few times as a child.

Yeah, face-palm. I just saw the paper note on my desk and noticed the spelling. Ugh.
You are the second one to recommend utopia, so I guess I should just join up and see what's what.

Nice to see you here @mazarax. Welcome!

Hey there Bram, welcome to steemit. Lot of developers here. I am sure you'll have a good time around here :)

Question: What is your favorite business/government building simulation?

I don't think I ever played pure business sims. But there is a business component in Transport Tycoon, which I loved. The last sim game I spent a lot of time in, is Factorio, dangerously addictive game I must say. My first love with world building games was Bluebyte's original "Siedler" game. I did build a world sim myself once, but many of my games are vehicle simulations (planes, cranes, tanks.)

Interesting will have check out Factorio and Siedler. I liked two blasts from the past the Tropico series, and Capitalism II. Two very cheap old games but fun to kill some time. A lot of what I do now is a baseball sim called Out of the Park (OOTP). Very realistic baseball management strategic sim down to having the actual talent base of the top high school freshmen-seniors this year as up and coming prospects in the June amateur draft.

Welcome. I am a long time sports/business sim enthusiast as well. Love the baseball sims, they have become very co-mingled with some of the experiences of front office duties over the past years.

Welcome. Read your post on AI and was intrigued, will follow to read more!

Welcome to this amazing platform! All the best for you.

Hey Bram, great to meet people from the gaming industry. I used to work as a QA for games in Ubisoft. I want to build my own game one day, but have no clue whatsoever where to start. Could you please point me in the right direction?

Hi rohan, I just published a tutorial on how to make a Snake game in Python. Check it out. I think it's an excellent way to get started.
