Steemit New User Tips: IntroduceYourself/Introduction Post

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

As a new user to Steemit, I know you want to dive right in and start posting and earning!

But resist!

You first must have a good following in order for your posts to be seen, otherwise -- who's going to vote on them??? I go over how to build a following here:

And to avoid wasting a post you've spent hours writing, I advise splitting big posts into segments in order to increase your chances of getting it noticed and increasing your earnings:

Here in this post, I'll tell you how to construct your first post, which will be your:

IntroduceYourself/Introduction post

As an example of how to do it, I'll share my "STEEMIT: Introduce Yourself" post with you so you have an idea of what a good one looks like.

I put it up on my YouTube channel so I can embed it here.

Now, here are the main things you need to know about your introduction post

Make SURE that #introduceyourself is the FIRST tag

The first tag is the one that identifies the "topic" of your post.

You want to make sure you have #introduceyourself as the FIRST tag.

Many seasoned Steemit users and whales search the #introduceyourself topic. The reason for this is to make sure that new users have an encouraging entry into Steemit, both financially and community-wise.

By putting the #introduceyourself tag FIRST, users will easily be able to identify your post as one to pay attention to, and if the post is well-presented, you'll likely get really good starting support.

Use other tags to identify the other things that you express about yourself in the post. Put those after the introduceyourself tag.

Be VISUAL

Use pictures at least, and video if you can.

If your post doesn't have a photo, video, or some kind of visual, it'll be easy to pass it over.

The first image or video you use in the post will show up as the thumbnail for the post, which is the image that will go along with your post in searches. So make the first one a good one.

Posts that show yourself and/or your face are very good because they count as verification of who you are. Which goes a long way towards proving that you are an authentic person who wants to contribute to the Steemit community as a whole.

Display your @ name and the current date

This verifies that you are indeed the person who is operating this account.

You can see in my video that I use a piece of paper with the Steemit logo, " @shayne ", and the date.

If you can find a creative way to do this that relates to the content you want to post on Steemit, that's even better.

  • If you're an artist, draw a picture
  • If you're a poet, write a sonnet
  • If you're a musician, write a short song

These sorts of things will help to not only make your introduction post stand out, but also help people know more about you as a person and give a heads-up about what kind of content you'll be posting in the future.

Go over who you are and what you intend to do

Did you come to Steemit to post creative writing?

Did you come to Steemit to post about technology or news?

Did you come to Steemit to post about investing or cryptocurrencies?

Make sure to mention these things in your introduction post so people know what to expect from you. And also use these interests to fill out the rest of your space in the tags section.

If you aren't sure what to use as a tag, check the Steemit home page "Tags and Topics" and see if you can find a popular tag that relates to the interests you talk about in your post.

Don't be afraid to get personal

Obviously, you don't want to reveal so much that it'll get you into trouble, but you want to be as emotionally naked as possible.

People on Steemit respond strongly to authenticity. It has something to do with the incentivization structure of this platform: Steemit does a good job of filtering out people who are real vs people who are fake or abusive.

Steemit is kind of like Buddhism: the more you try to get something out of it, the less you'll get; but once you submit your ego and greed to Steemit, the more it will reward you for it.

It's kind of like a natural order on a digital platform.

So be yourself. Let us all know what you fear and what you desire out of life. Be spiritually available. Tell us about your anxieties and your triumphs.

And before you know it you'll have a KILLER introduceyourself post.

Let me know what you think!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me!

I'll do my best to answer you.

I care a lot about what my followers and the Steemit community at large think -- so feel free to leave a comment!

Thank you Shayne, invaluable post for a newcomer like me. I am in the process of making my intro, it is so tempting to dive right in because this place is so positive, I love it!

More wonderfully helpful information! Thank you! Wish I would have understood about the getting involved with the community before starting to post my content. I believe my earlier posts could have earned more had I followed this advice early on.
So here is a question if you have a moment, or anyone for that matter. What if one was to create a new post with a new picture based on a previous post in order to get it seen? Maybe add in more information and a twist (i.e. my organic natural chocolate recipe with something different added in like nuts) so it is not exactly the same. Would this be a good option?

I don't see a problem with that, really.

Exposure is a fickle thing on Steemit.

I've written several posts that are all basically about the same topic, just worded differently or with new or updated information.

@raincountry That sounds like a great idea! You can surely write it differently or with a more 'fresh' perspective so currently followers wouldn't feel it's too spammy. In my world of nutrition I often have to repeat concepts several times for people to not only notice but understand the 'how' and the 'why' behind what I'm asking them to do.

I did all these, did an improved intro but still only 3 people checked it out. And I see other post with less effort and they get upvoted. It's unfair :(

I hope people don't feel entitled to upvotes. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. All you can do is position yourself the best you can hope for the best. Best luck!

Thanks for your response

Thank you so much! I found this very helpful but I also wish I could have someone explain very enough and how I can really get involved in steemit. It sounds so exciting but I am yet to have my piece

Thank you for this.
Are you suggesting to make a video introducing yourself rather than write a post?

Welcome @shayne . You should also upvote people that comment on your post.

This is not the way to go about doing Steemit, dude. You didn't even read the post. You're going to start getting flagged for spam soon.

I try to upvote people that make comments on my posts. If I have steem power. Just saying. No offence.

You're spamming. I'm just giving you a friendly warning because you're new. You can choose to listen or not. I just hope you don't start getting flagged for upvote-begging.

Wow! Nice Post to share! :)
btw I just upvoted your post and also followed u

thank you very much!
i also follow you back :)

Followed you
Ps follow back

Isn't this misleading the purpose of the following and building up connections in the community?
Especially under a guide like this?
Thought its to start up chats and get connected through interests ect, having people follow the sort of known essential content?

i just signed up here new, but i was hoping not to have this same childish run on followers like facebook, Instagram and co.

Please don't take it as an offence, it is just meant in general. What do you guys post about and what are your interests? Then of course I'd think about following.

By the way, thank you for the guide, it was very helpful.

I am mainly interested in cryptocurrencies, investments, especially european point of view, literature, and openminded towards any interesting sounding suggestions. These will be my main posting subjects, too.
If you feel like replying, what your posted content will be about, i will pleasently think to follow you.

Thanks :)

From marketing to MarketKing

lol

nice write up

Absolutely great article! I didn't know that the first tag is the most important, now it makes more sense. I am trying to familiarize myself with the platform first before writing anything, though i see people posting articles with ridiculous content... won't even go there! haha
Why is video important? I would rather read (old school) than watch videos (millennials) :)
followed you :)

Video is more authentic. Someone could easily edit some photo off of a random person's Facebook profile (catfishing). Video? Not so much.

ahhh i see :) ..we are talking about different things. I sometimes find posts with video only and not always am in the mood to watch, just need peace and quiet and a good article to read ;) if you get my point.
Other than that for introduce yourself I totally get it why video is a better proof!

shayne: thank you. This I think has been the easiest info I have heard since starting Steemit a few days ago. Being old and techtarded isn't easy. The majority of the groans I've heard is the difficulty in manoeuvring around. I've looked all over for a way to return. Just can't find it. Thanks again

If you are asking it's meaning= I don't have the knowledge of today's technology, I cannot understand the terms, short forms, crap, I even argue with spell check. Hope that answers your ? Billytwohearts

Thank you Shane!

Very good advice. thank you.

@shayne bienvenido al mundo steemit, upvote.

Very informative! Thank you for sharing this. I know you have many followers already, and im one of them, hoping you could follow me as well.

Wow, your post is really an eye opener. I've been thinking for almost two months now on how to create a thrilling "introduce yourself post". You just opened up my mind to possibilities. God bless your heart. Watchout for me (@fessikay)on the Steemit community.

Drafting my introduction post, I was a little weary maybe I was allowing things to get too personal and drawn out. It is reassuring to read this post encouraging sharing personal experiences and remaining emotionally open and honest. Really awesome post, thank you so much for the help I really appreciate it.

Wow! This is really eye opening!
I wish I had done more research before I went full steam ahead and posted three whole essays.
I will use this as my guide though, and get a belated self-introduction posted soon.
Thank you very much for this 😊

This video has enough information and looks original. I may not do a video introduction of myself though, i think a picture would work for me

Today I created my steemit.com and I am glad that I found your post before I started to write my #introduceyourself.
I am really excited to become a part of the steemit Community.
Some points you mention will help me to make my #introduceyourself a bit more professional. Especially the point, that I don't have to be afraid to get personal is important for me!
Thanks a lot !

Thanks alot shayne for the information , it really means alot to me , atleast now i can come up with the best introduction.

Awesome post, @shayne! I'm brand new here, made a post, then ran across this recommendation by you! About to do my Introduction post now! LOL I guess that will be the second post, instead of my first - Oops! Rookie mistake!

How and where does one introduce themselves here?

On your own wall, using the tips I outline here :)

I am new here if am to post news how do i add citation other stuff

Thank you Shayne for these important tips. I am in the process of preparing my intro so I will be able to do it better, having read your information.

Very Helpful. Im just writing my first post now after sitting on Steemit for a month. Glad I found this.

Good job on this post. I am very new to Steemit so I am looking for articles that help me figure out how I can use Steemit. I really appreciate your simple instructions to help new users know how to get started.

Thanks a lot! I try.

Is it better to show the photo of myself? It seems it can get more upvote.

Showing a photo of yourself is a good idea, as I said in the post. It will help. But there are no guarantees, of course.

Great post! I will write my introduction post tomorrow and this helped me a lot. I wrote down your advice ><

This is very helpful. I'm glad I came across this.

Hey Shayne. I found this very helpful since I am also in the process of writing my intro. My favorite part is about authenticity. Great advice. Thanks

Thank you. I'm glad you got something out of it. :)

Thanks @shayne for the info! I almost just made a post to put my first one up. I am going to think a little more on how i want to do the introduction

Thank you Shayne. I am very new to all this and want to put some time and effort into this. I want to dive in but am nervous about starting it all. I will begin to get my introduction together and share with everyone very soon. I want to really have fun with it since I write a lot for myself but I would love to share it with everyone. Here's to the next step. Thank you again!!

Hello shayne, thanks for all the information you ve shared, im new steemer and im working in my first post to introduce myself.
Un saludo from Canary Islands!!

I have a better understanding now on how to go about my intro post. although like u said, im still trying to get followers so as to get my post noticed.
Thanks again.

This is Really Helpful @shayne. This is a Goldmine for us who are New here in Steemit. More Power to you! And Keep on Making Great Content!

Thank you! I am going to take time to write one now :)

Thank you for this! I was really having a hard time trying to think of what to write for my introductory post. Good thing I stumbled upon this and now I kinda know what to write about. :)

Awesome tips.Thanks for sharing ..!

Thanks for info! I wish I read this before I started)

You can always redo your introduction post! :D

Thank you @shayne for posting this awesome guidance. it helps me a lot as beginner to prepare my content before posting it on steemit. i am pretty sure this article gives more benefits for more people about how to write based on their personality

Great post man! Really helpful.

Thanks @shayne your post has been really helpful, as i am looking forward to writing my introduction post. Would really appreciate if i can also acknowledge you while writing mine and also making a reference to this post. My aim is to solely help minnows like myself out here who would come across my post and also to also serve as a guide in the steemit community....... Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your amazing tips! Now I feel motivated to start writing :)

Nice @shayne

Peaceful parenting FTW! Thanks for the post @shayne I like your style :D

Yup... Steemit makes real guy in real community. Thanks for a wonderful tip @shayne, I'm new and I'll make it one!

Thankyou shayne for this amazing post! It really helped me, I'm still in the middle of writing my introduction post and it's harder than I thought! But you're post really cleared my mind about what to write and what not to! So thanks.

Thanks brother for sharing this amazing tips

Great post @shayne, i know it is a bit old, but still helped me a lot recently :)

Oh boy. This is a great tutorial. I still haven't made any introduceyourself post up to now and I'm almost 3 months old on the site (only 2 months active though).

I just like to lurk in the shadows maybe, and observe things before doing any intro. I'm thinking my quality posts would speak for who I am but yeah it is better to post an intro so people will know who I am and what can be expected of me.

Maybe I will post one next month, or when I feel like I should. :D

Reading through your post inspired me to start writing the song for my introduction post...it'll be ready soon. Thank you, Shayne!

that was so helpful
In fact, I wanted to create a self-introduction post right now
But I liked to start with a bomb thing
Your post made me think a bit and creatively more

Thank you for taking the time to write this. I am a brand new user and this was so helpful!

Hi, thanks for this post. This is very helpful for newbies like me.
Cheers!

Thanks Shayne, this really opened my eyes

hi shayne how long the lenght ?? of the post

Thank you Shayne, I am new be here in steemit. Actually I don't know how to make intro, then I found your positive post that gonna be helpful for me. Keep it up, love your beautiful vibes.

Thanks @shayne...as said by so many others really helpful post. There's so much help and imformatiom here on #steemit its slightly overwhelming. I'm definately going slow with creating my introduce yourself posting. I was curious about tags. Maybe you can help. I saw one post saying only 5 tags and another saying as many as you like (and with looooads in the actual post)? Which is it? Cheers and again thankyou

So be yourself. Let us all know what you fear and what you desire out of life. Be spiritually available. Tell us about your anxieties and your triumphs.

Love that tip and how steemit is a more intimate platform than many others! That's a great way to genuinely connect with others!

Thanks for the information, this is very useful for beginners in steemit :)

You are welcome :)

You just made introduceyourself post more easier and simpler to do. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your tips, I was really hesitating to introduce my self on steem, but now that I read your post, I feel more confident in posting my introduce your self.

I Love this introduction since am new and trying to get an introduction and don't know how to go about it.
Thanks so much.

I Love this introduction since am new and trying to get an introduction and don't know how to go about it.
Thanks so much.

Thanks for the great post Shayne.
Big help with how to make my first post to Steemit.

This is the most detailed information about how to introduce yourself to steemit. It gave me the right ideas on how to create mine. Thank you.

Hi Shayne, awesome #introduceyourself video, watched the whole thing. I was born and raised in Washington State. Keep up the good work =D

@shayne Thanks for sharing some valuable information with us. Can you please help me to get upvote and follower? What do you do for that?

I've already posted three posts in Steemit before I decided to stop being such a shy cry baby and do an introductory post. Thank you very much for this post, really, it made me know what I'll have to do next. This seriously helped me out a lot, I'd definitely look back on this post when I'm writing my introduction!

Hi @shayne can you tell me how long after your introduceyourself post you should wait before another. I saw something which said you should wait a few days between posts initially so each post stays at the top of your feed for a few days

Thanks Shayne, useful tips .As a newcomer one of the first post that i found and i did my introduceyourself post according to what you described here.

showing a picture of yourself is powerful idea and its really helpful for beginners like me

Hi @shayne , thanks for the tips.
I have a nice picture profil i would like to use and edit with steem logo, date and username.
Do you recommand me to take a picture of myself with a white paper in hand as you said people can edit fake photos but i will also post a small video where you can see me.
Thanks

thank you for this post.. this is exactly what i needed as a newbie.

Thank you very much for this valuable post.
I think, the benefits I have gained and the more accurate logical information I get, the more new users like me will be of much benefit.

Hi... I just had my account verified! So it was really helpfull to see your post to make sure I am starting the best way possible! Thanks 👏🏼

Thanks for the hint with the #introduceyourself tag. I was not aware of how Steemit is assigning posts to different categories until now. Unfortunately I did not know about the introduction board and just started posting. Will make up for that now! Hope there is no shame in the introduction post being the second blog entry instead of the first. :)

nice post shyan.. i am making my Intro same as you say..

follow me and check how is it

Thank you so much for sharing information for newbies like me! I am in the process of curating my intro and I'll make sure to heed on to your advice.

Hey Shayne. I'm glad you wrote this. I was going to dive right in with my first post, but I didn't have any idea how to begin, so with the format you outlined above, I can start off on the right foot.
