Hello steemit community!

Let's just get started with the silly name.

Yes, it's true.

My name since birth really has been "Corky".

It's actually a nickname, and my real name is Emmett. The problem was, that my father's name was already Emmett and so was my grandfather's. I'm a III. And since that sounds kinda royal, I have selected to create the username Sir Cork.

As the story goes, I was born, short, bald and fat, like my namesake grandfather was at the time. Only he wasn't fat, and I wasn't short. Anyway, for the first week I was alive, I didn't actually have a name at ALL! They called me the boy, the baby, and probably other names I wouldn't learn till my time on the playgrounds of youth much later. They argued over what to name me, back and forth between my parents, when finally granddad stepped in and said if you name him after me, I'll buy a $100 bond on his birthday every year till I'm gone. So they did, and he did, and granddad finally passed when I was about 7 years old. When I was 16, my grandfather's bonds bought my first car, a Chevy Chevette, from his grave! Weird, right?

So. Now I own a software company. I've spent 30 years in tech, and prior to my career, bought my first computer in 1982 and learned to code in BASIC on that shiny new 16k TRS-80 Color Computer which I bought with money saved from mowing lawns at 14 years old.

Modems came next, and dropping out of college came later. I went on to work at some of the most famous companies in the world, and spent some time consulting to the government in various technical roles in Washington DC and at NASA in Huntsville. During my time in the DC area where I grew up, (actually, in Northern Virginia) I won an award from President Clinton and VP Al Gore for my contribution to things that were at the time alleged to be making government more efficient. (Did it work? Pffffft. That's a whole 'nother post, friends!)

I'm leaving tons of stuff and years out. But before now, I've been married, and divorced. Twice. Sigh. And lived in 6 states and dozens of towns. As a technical consultant, software developer and corporate gypsy, I moved up and down the dial. Predominately on the east coast of the United States, but with a year of sowing wild oats at 21 as a lift operator on Aspen Highlands Ski Resort in Aspen, Colorado. In another sideline departure from my mainline tech career, I was a manager at a drag strip for a year. I like to do the things most people only talk about doing, live in exotic places and my life has always moved at about 900 miles per hour as a result.

Fast forwarding to now, lest this post get crazy epic long, I live in a tiny house, off grid on 17 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. I have 17 acres with nothing but a few solar panels, and a crisp, cold spring I haul up my water in buckets from for use around the cabin.

I also own a two story office building in my small town on Main Street, in a place that is at least 75 years behind the rest of America. It's like the Mayberry of the old Andy Griffith show. Except with a rural meth epidemic, and much angrier cops.

Man, I could go on forever here. I like crazy things like shooting my firearms, anarcho-capitalism, skydiving, drag racing and sports cars, 4x4's and motorcycles. I firmly believe there is nothing stopping anyone from trying new things, except people themselves and I refuse to be stopped, by anything except law enforcement or physics! :)

Anyway, the rest of the stuff that has happened in the last 48 years is so crazy and often extreme, that you likely wouldn't believe me anyway. But hey, I am friendly, don't bite, and have a lot of free time on my hands, so ask me anything and I'll tell you a story, almost guaranteed to be true!

Looking forward to making some new friends here on steemit. I think it's going to be great fun!

Won't you be my neighbor?

Yours truly,
The guy steemit instructed to introduce himself.

(SirCork)

PS: If you play Guild Wars 2, I go by this name there as well on Anvil Rock. Shoot me a PM in-game, I play several days a week. At least when nothing is in my head to pour out into words on social media, that is.

Bonus PS: If you need web application development consulting, and are committed to long term team cohesion on larger scale projects with adequate funding, drop me a line. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Okay, one more thing... I was a guest on a couple of business podcasts last year. Here are the links if you'd like to hear me tell some of these crazy stories, and drop some random business advice on you in full color audio!

Smashing The Plateau with David Shriner-Cahn
With Special Guest, Corky Kaericher on How and Why to Build a Micro-Multinational Company

or

The Conscious Millionaire with JV Crum III featuring special guest, Corky Kaericher

(And no, despite the flashy podcast title, I was just a guest. I am certainly not a millionaire myself. But goooooo crypto power!!!! Wish me luck!)

If you read this far, may you live long and prosper. If you didn't well, I'm sending you unread, unrequited best wishes anyway!

See y'all on Steemit!

Well welcome to Steemit @sircork. I have read till end and have received your wishes consciously. Thanks for that :) quite a story behind your name..No one could have imagined had you not told about it. Looking forward to your posts here on Steemit.

I promise all my stories will be true at least most of the time ! :) Thanks for reading my nonsense! I'll see you around steemit for sure!

Hahaha ..See you around :)

Not if I see you first! HAHA, just kidding, you bet, I plan to be here a while. This is my kinda joint!

yea mine too!

Wow! What a fascinating journey you've had to get here! Glad to have you :)

Just a hint from one newbie to another: Try to use the #minnowsunite. This will get your work in front of other minnows dedicated to helping the community make it to the next level, as well as some more established folks who are generously working to help us along.

Best of luck!

Thanks for reading my nonsense! As for your tip, so I put this in the tags or include it as a hashtag like you did in the post?

Unless they changed something in the latest hard fork (whatever that means lol) it doesn't matter. If you do #jrhughesistechtarded in the body of your post it will show up in that topic. Same as if you just put jrhughesistechtarded in the little 'tags' field. And you can only use five total including any you put as #blahblahblah in the post body. The comments are a loophole as you can see ;)

Thanks for helping me figure it out!

Welcome to Steem @sircork I have sent you a tip

Holy cow, wow! THANK YOU! you've busted my newbie bubble (Keeping that thought as clean as I can, anyway, hehe!) I'm flattered, honored and grateful! Cheers!

You should post some things about what it's like to live in the mountains off the grid. I think that's pretty cool! :)

Oh I'm sure the madcap adventures of being a globally accessible hermit will surface in all the worst possible ways. Hehe. Stay tuned. I'm just getting warmed up and I've got more than one man should be allowed to say stuck in this grizzly old head looking for an outlet. No seriously, do you have an outlet? I live on solar and it's been cloudy and my phone is almost dead. ;) LOL :)

Wow, I'm still learning and I just accused a poster one minute after you of being first. Well, let's not tell him, and our deep, soul bound connection here can be our little secret! :) Thank you so much for reading and commenting! I'm shocked my first post even saw the light of day!

welcome to steem sircork. Have a blast

I already am, for sure. My work requires me to manage clients in American and two full stack tech teams in the India timezones, and since Monday started there last night and we have some big deliverables due this week, I haven't slept in about 30 hours now. So I hope this post was coherent LOL! Thanks for reading it!

I welcome you to the amazing world of steemit! You will definitely get a whole new experience from all the wonderful people in this community.
Also feel free to follow @GLOBALFOODBOOK for instant updates on assorted yummy and nutritious recipes.
All the best!

Thank you for stopping by to say hello. As a confirmed bachelor who doesn't actually own a proper kitchen besides a camp stove and a cooler in my off-grid cabin home, who runs a busy software company from an office in town 20 hours a day, I pretty much eat waffle house and fast food and pizza and chinese buffet, so I am not your target market, in the least haha. I will take a peek though anyway, because maybe you have some good PB&J recipes for bad winter days when I can't get off the mountain! :D

Wow. That's great intro about you. Keep it up.
Never say never! You never can tell if my page can prompt you to start preparing your own dishes... LOL

Prepare them? First I'd have to own some dishes... and that leads to the most horrendous crisis of all!!!! (Washing the dishes! :P )

Oooopppss! 😀
I wish I could help! Mmmmm

Somehow I suspect ordering me a pizza is against your religion, @GlobalFoodBook ! :)

Hahaha wish I could get away with not having to do dishes! You're living the dream!

It's a bachelor's life for meee :)

Nice post :) I really had to laugh at the first part of your post! Keep it up, I like this.

I will if you will! :) (and thanks!)

Thanks! I'm a big old dork :)

I will indeed live long and prosper. I'm a big ron paul fan and I dream of all of us living in ancapistan where we can be peaceful anarcho-capitalists! So welcome neighbor, hope you like it here! Following you to see what you post about!

Thanks! I haven't slept in like 30 hours, so the post is nutty, but I blame my off shore capitalism crew and the ethereum overnight madness for keeping me up. Ah, an AnCap neighbor. I can live with that! Just get off my lawn! :D :D :D And following back. I might need support against the helicopter passengers :)

Corky, what a wonderful name!

Welcome to Steemit. :)

So glad to connect with you in the chat room!

Wish you all the best. Following you already! :)

Thank you for the compliment. And follow, and followed back at ya! A pleasure!

Hey there neighbor! Your life looks fun and adventurous! I cant wait to hear stories of the mountains and motorcycles!!

Haha, well I am glad I came to your blog space. So, I guess I am warranted with more questions cause you don't have much up yet!

If you don't wanna answer here, maybe my questions will be not post fodder.

I'd love to learn and see more about:

  • your tiny house (PICTURES PLEASE).
  • your solar power.
  • what you do on your property.
  • general awesome pictures of your property.
  • do you have livestock animals?

Uhmmmmm what else...

I always find it uniquely interesting to learn that many IT people want to and enjoy rural living! It seems like such an opposite! My husband wanted this land in the middle of nowhere too.

I have all those things. Mostly not much current stuff though, but you'll get your fix farm junkie. Don't worry. :)
