(MT Newswires) -- Wall Street looked set for a negative open on the penultimate trading day of the week with key equity futures gauges hinting at modest declines for the US' key benchmark indexes when markets open.

European bourses were trading lower and Asian exchanges closed choppily with Tokyo higher but Hong Kong and Shanghai flat ahead of major economic releases slated for Friday from Beijing.

In equity news, Germany-based Tui, a travel group, said second-quarter revenue was off 98% year-over-year. Cisco Systems (CSCO) shares were down 6.3% pre-bell on a weak sales outlook.

Meanwhile Bitcoin is trading at $11,398, West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures are trading at approximately $42.63 per barrel and 10-year US Treasuries offer 0.67%. Gold, meanwhile, is trading near $1,929 an ounce.

On the economic calendar is the weekly jobless claims report at 8:30 am ET, with pundits positing 1.15 million new claims.

Import and export prices are also due to be posted at 8:30 am. The EIA domestic natural gas inventories bulletin will be published at 10:30 am ET.

For Federal Reserve-watchers, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic is slated to speak at 11:00 am ET. Netease (NTES), Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) and Tapestry (TPR) will report earnings pre-bell, among others.

The S&P 500 is off 0.1%, the Nasdaq is off 0.1% and the Dow Jones is flat. In Europe, the British FTSE 100 is off 0.9%, the French CAC is off 0.1%, and the German DAX is off 0.2%

The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose for the third straight day, up 405.65 to 23,249.61. The Hong Kong Hang Seng Index opened higher but slipped in trading to finish essentially flat, off 0.05% as investors awaited mainland China economic data. Investors in China were similarly steady, with the Shanghai Composite gaining a slight 0.04%. The broad gauge Hang Seng fell 13.35 to 25,230.67, as losing issues outnumbered gainers 26 to 21.

On the other exchanges, the S. Korean Kospi rose 0.2; the Taiwan TWSE inclined 0.7%; the Australian ASX 200 declined 0.7%; the Singapore Straits Times Index rose 1.3%, and the Thai Set inclined 0.7%. In late trading in Mumbai, the Sensex was off 0.2%.

The MSCI Asia Apex 50, a broad measure of large-cap Asian stocks outside Japan, slipped 0.01%.
