5 Ways to Protect Your iPhone from Scratches, Cracks, and Water Damage

If you use your iPhone on a daily basis, or even if you just use it every once in awhile, there’s no doubt that you’re familiar with the frustration of dropping your iPhone and breaking it. Many people are aware of water damage as an issue, but did you know that you can actually crack the back of your iPhone by carrying it around in your pocket? There are many ways to protect your iPhone from scratches, cracks, and water damage, so here are 5 tips to keep your iPhone looking new and working properly for years to come.

  1. What are the basics?
If you’re going to carry your phone with you everywhere, it’s crucial that you protect it. You should always have a case on your phone (or at least have one on-hand for when accidents happen), and it doesn’t hurt to invest in a screen protector. But if you do drop your phone or spill water on it, follow these 5 steps for cleaning up any damage.

  2. Always have a case
Whether you carry your phone in your pocket or purse, it’s always a good idea to put it in a case. It can take a few seconds extra each time you put your phone away but will help protect it for years. Cases will vary in price but can range from $10-200+.

  3. Use screen protectors
Getting a case is a great first step toward protecting your device. However, if you’re prone to dropping or mishandling your phone—or if you just want an added layer of protection—you should consider getting a screen protector as well. It can provide defense against small falls, scratches, dirt and dust. Screen protectors aren’t perfect though; they don’t guard against drops or other major impacts.

  4. Avoid extreme temperatures
Heat expands materials, so extreme heat will expand your iPhone’s case—putting pressure on its internal components. And cold temperatures can cause condensation inside your phone; likewise, extreme cold can affect your phone’s internal electrical systems. Because of these issues, it’s best to keep your smartphone away from places that tend to fluctuate in temperature.

  5. Keep your phone clean
A little dirt won’t hurt your phone, but too much can cause serious damage. Avoid getting your phone filthy in public places or under tables at restaurants. Also, wash your hands often to avoid transferring oil and bacteria to your smartphone screen. If you have kids or pets that like to use your phone as a toy, keep it out of their reach when they aren’t supervised. Make sure everyone in your family knows how important it is not to touch your mobile device without washing their hands first. In addition to keeping your screen clean, also try to minimize scratches by keeping your phone in a protective case. Consider one with rubber corners for extra protection against drops. Many newer cases are also waterproof, which will help protect against water damage if you accidentally drop it into a sink or toilet bowl (don’t ask). Even better: Remove the battery cover and store it separately so that water cannot seep into your phone if there are any leaks around its exterior ports.
