Conservative candidate Ibrahim Reisi from the close circle of spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei won the presidential elections in Iran.
Conservative candidate Ibrahim Reisi won the presidential elections in Iran with about 62 percent of the votes, according to official results. According to the statement made by the Minister of Interior of Iran, Abdulreza Rahmani, the turnout rate in the election with 59 million registered voters was 48.8%. The 2021 presidential elections thus went down in history as the presidential election with the lowest turnout in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The other three candidates competing in the election, former Revolutionary Guards Commander and conservative politician Muhsin Rızai, Abdulnasır Himmeti, who is the only reformist candidate in the race and who served as the Chairman of the Central Bank, and Emir Hüseyin Kadızade Hashemi, sent congratulatory messages to the Chief before the election results were finalized.
Iran's new president is expected to take office on August 3.
His chief also ran against Hassan Rouhani in the 2017 presidential elections and managed to get 38 percent of the votes at that time. Rouhani, who has been the president for two terms, did not run for the presidency this time.
A mid-level Shiite cleric, his chief is from the close circle of Iran's spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and supported by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Reisi and expressed his hope for "further development of constructive bilateral relations" between Russia and Iran. According to the statement made by the Russian Embassy in Tehran, announced by the RIA news agency, Putin said, "We respect the decision of the Iranian people. We are ready to regularly strengthen cooperation with the Islamic Republic, as with previous Iranian presidents."
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also congratulated Reisi on his election victory. According to the statement made by the Syrian presidency, Assad expressed his desire to work with the new president to improve relations between the two countries.
Hasan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, one of the most important political forces in Lebanon, also shared a photo of him with his leader on his Twitter account with the message "Greetings to Ibrahim".
Iraqi President Bahram Saleh also issued a congratulatory message and said, "We in Iraq hope to strengthen our strong relations with our neighbor Iran and its people."
