With regards to those Hamas members or other Palestinians who raped women and girls when they attacked the music festival at Be’eri and the nearby Israeli settlements, no one – not even Rashida Tlaib or Ilhan Omar, and no one from the PLO or Hezbollah or Hamas – should consider those Hamas sex offenders to be “freedom fighters” or “Palestinian patriots.” If you rape, you are a rapist, and you deserve to be treated as such – HARSHLY – whether you are a Palestinian or an Israeli, a Muslim, a Christian, or a Jew.
No dispute over territory, no conflict about sovereignty, no historical argument regarding whose land it is should ever be used as a justification for sexual molestation or rape. Any group or organization, any army or militia that encourages, permits, condones, or celebrates rape should be considered illegitimate and beyond the pale, regardless of the history of the conflict. Some acts are simply heinous, no matter who commits them or against whom they are committed, no matter what reason is offered for committing the crime, no matter the politics of the underlying dispute. No Palestinian or Israeli or Lebanese or Jordanian or Syrian or Egyptian or Iranian or anyone else, of whatever nationality, religion, or political persuasion, should ever consider it morally acceptable to argue in support of rape or in defense of rapists, regardless of circumstance.
