World-renowned economist and do-gooder Jeffrey Sachs demonstrates that, when it comes to the subject of Israel, he has his head firmly embedded in a very dark place.
Like most every other country in the world – including western democracies such as the U.S. and the U.K. – Israel has done some bad things to people who didn’t deserve it. It is not a perfect state, nor does it have a spotless record. But is it committing “genocide” in Gaza, as Sachs claims? Is it engaged in “ethnic cleansing,” as Sachs also claims in the article he wrote for "Common Dreams"?
Sachs is flat-out lying about the goals and actions of the Israeli government and the Israeli military in regards to Gaza.
He claims that “The Israeli government’s…objective with the incursion in Gaza is to push the population out of the territory.” That’s nonsense!
To support this claim he quotes the mayor of Metulla, a little town of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants in the far north of Israel. The mayor there has no role at all in determining Israeli policy towards Gaza, more than 100 miles away. Sachs claims, without providing any links or other evidence, that “Israel aimed from the start of its invasion of Gaza to push the Gazans into Egypt…” Really? Israel has the military power to expel the people of Gaza. It has not done so. Sachs is making up this libelous claim, which is not something that an academic with an international reputation ought to be doing!
