The rhythm that heals! ''Tarantella''.. Il ritmo che guarisce! (Eng. ~ Ita.)

Hello steemians.. today I want to share with you some curiosities related to the world of music, yes, but the music that cure! I was born and raised in central Italy and since I was young I have been immersed in the ancient rhythms of the south, and for a personal curiosity, I have always wondered where these melodies came from.

Today, thanks to my experience of almost twenty years in the folk group, and to the studies and research carried out on my behalf, on the music of the south, I can share with you some curiosities about "medicinal music".

Music and dance since the dawn of time, have always been defined as a spiritual purification, a solution to all the ills of the body and the soul, for any person, who psychophysically improves from any malaise only by letting go of it.

One music in particular has always been responsible for these miraculous benefits and this is associated with the city of Naples and all of southern Italy, naturally I speaking of the Tarantella. Very famous dance and melody, probably one of the most famous dances in the world and at the same time, one of the least known by the southerners and the Neapolitans themselves.

Ciao steemians.. oggi voglio condividere con voi alcune curiositá legate al mondo della musica, si ma la musica che cura! Sono nato e cresciuto nel centro Italia e sin da giovane, sono stato immerso nei ritmi antichi del sud, ed per una curiositá personale, mi sono sempre chiesto da dove provenissero queste melodie.

Oggi grazie alla mia esperienza quasi ventennale nel gruppo folk, ed agli studi e ricerche effettuati per mio conto, sempre sulla musica del sud, posso spartire con voi alcune curiositá sulla "musica medicinale".

La musica e la danza sin dalla notte dei tempi, sono sempre state definite come una purificazione spirituale, soluzione a tutti mali del corpo e dell'anima, per qualsiasi persona, che migliora psicofisicamente da qualunque malessere soltanto lasciandosi andare ad essa.

Una musica in particolare é da sempre responsabile di questi miracolosi benefici e questa é associata alla cittá di Napoli e a tutto il sud Italia, naturalemte sto parlando della Tarantella. Famosissima danza e melodia, probabilmente uno dei balli più conosciuti al Mondo e allo stesso tempo, uno dei meno conosciuti dai meridionali e dai napoletani stessi.

The origins of the Tarantella

Its ancient origins derive from the strong Greek influence that underwent all of Southern Italy in the archaic period, which led to a period of great splendor and civilization the ancient populations. The culture and customs of the Greeks soon spread throughout the south, including the cult of the God Dionysus, (Bacchus for the Romans) characterized by drunkenness, dancing, exaltation and fury, great was the theoretical elaboration that followed.

And thanks to the Pythagoreans, who considered these new places an elective homeland, where they could conduct the study of harmony and generate the "catharsis" (liberation of the soul) through song, dance, the study of rhythms and music.

With the rhythm of krotala (castanets) lyre and tympanum (ancient instruments still in use), singing and dancing became stimulating elements to enter trance and surrender to the liberating frenzy. All this was due to the rituals and worship of the God of wine and drunkenness, deities that symbolized ecstasy and perdition.

The protagonist of the rituals became the dancing women (bacchantes), in the grip of frenzy, who celebrated life with exuberant dances, songs, almost as if they were madness. Some scholars derive the term Tarantella from Taras, the ancient city of Taranto, which was particularly linked to the God of wine. But only in the Middle Ages the dance had its most significant transformations, as a ritual, roughly as we know it today.

Le origini della Tarantella

Le sue antiche origini derivano dalla forte influenza Greca che subì tutto il sud Italia in antichitá, che portò alle antiche popolazioni un periodo di grande splendore, cultura e civiltà. Le usanze ed i costumi dei Greci si diffusero ben presto in tutto il meridione, compreso il culto del Dio Dioniso (Bacco per i romani) caratterizzato da ebbrezza, balli, esaltazione e furore, grande fú l’elaborazione teorica che poi ne seguì.

E propio grazie ai pitagorici, che ritenevano questi nuovi luoghi una patria sperimentale, dove poter condurre gli studi dell’armonia e generare la “catarsi” (liberazione dell’anima) attraverso il canto, la danza, lo studio dei ritmi e della musica.

Con il ritmo delle krotala (nacchere), lira e timpano (strumenti antichi ancora in uso), il canto e le danze divenivano elementi stimolanti per entrare in trance e abbandonarsi alla frenesia liberatrice. Tutto ció era riconducibile ai riti e al culto del Dio del vino e dell’ebbrezza, divinitá che simboleggiavano l’estasi e la perdizione.

Protagoniste dei riti divennero le donne danzanti (baccanti), in preda alla frenesia, che celebravano la vita con danze esuberanti, canti, quasi come fossero in preda alla follia. Alcuni studiosi fanno derivare il termine Tarantella da Taras, l’antica città di Taranto, che era particolarmente legata al Dio del vino. Ma solo nel medioevo il ballo ebbe le sue trasformazioni più significative, come rituale grosso modo come oggi lo conosciamo.

With the spread of Christianity, persecutions began with the ancient pagan rituals. One of the architects of these persecutions was St. Paul, who severely criticized pagan rites, and many centuries later, he himself became the patron saint of the victims of the spider bite the tarantates. Perhaps the repression became the cause of the birth of a more cautious and stylized tarantella.

Fortunately, the repression was not sufficient and this dance continued to live up to the present day, also in the form of an antidote, against the bite of spiders, from which the name to the tarantula is linked.

Several scholars were interested in the case, always described negatively, as the bite of the tarantula (mistakenly confused with the bite of the malmignatta) served as an alibi to women for "free atque impune viros petere" (seek males, freely and with impunity) and men for justify their follies, allowing an outburst or a stimulus to the eroticism of women, who bit by the spider, were free to leave themselves to unclear actions.

Con il dilagare del cristianesimo, iniziarono anche le persecuzioni verso gli antichi rituali pagani. Uno degli artefici di tali persecuzioni fú San Paolo, che duramente criticava i riti pagani, ed molti secoli dopo, egli stesso divenne santo protettore delle vittime del morso del ragno, i tarantati. Forse proprio la repressione divenne la causa della nascita di una tarantella piú cautelosa e stilizzata.

Per fortuna la repressione non fú sufficiente e questo ballo continuó a vivere sin ai giorni nostri, sottoforma anche di antidoto, contro il morso dei ragni, dal quale si ricollega appunto il nome alla tarantola.

Diversi studiosi si interessarono al caso, descrivevano sempre negativamente, come il morso della tarantola (erroneamente confuso con il morso della malmignatta) servisse da alibi alle donne per “libere atque impune viros petere” (ricercare maschi, liberamente e impunemente) e agli uomini per giustificare le loro follie, consentendo uno sfogo o uno stimolo all’erotismo delle donne, che morse dal ragno, erano libere di lasciarsi ad atti impuri.

After the Middle Ages in Naples the dance takes two different forms, a more sober linked to the world of the courts of the aristocrats, the other continues to maintain its original characteristics, while retaining in both, a strong erotic component. While in the neighboring regions the rhythms and names of the dance they acquired different ways and styles that differed from one another, while maintaining the same origin.

Over the centuries this dance has fascinated writers, scholars and intellectuals who came from all over the world, to study and analyze the tarantella, such as Goethe, Lamartine, Mme de Staël, who devoted much research and writings to it. Attanasio Kircher scholar and philosopher of the seventeenth century German. in his writing he illustrates the Antidotum Tarantulae, that is, the musical composition that would have very strong therapeutic effects, which would be strongly linked to the Dionysian cults.

Even today this dance continues to fascinate for its frenetic and engaging rhythm, becoming liberation and venting from every problem of modern life. In my travels with the folk group, I was lucky enough to know both Puglia and Calabria, which perhaps hold the most beautiful and ancient forms of pizzica and tarantella we have received today, certainly very similar to those ancestral rhythms of thousands of years fá, which fortunately today still survive and are increasingly valorizati and protected.

Trascorso il medioevo a Napoli, il ballo assume due diverse forme, una più sobria legata al mondo delle corti degli aristocratici, l’altra continua a mantenere le sue caratteristiche originarie, conservandosi peró in entrambe, una forte componente erotica. Mentre nelle regioni limitrofe i ritmi ed i nomi della danza, acquisirono modi e stili un pó differenti l'uno dall'altro, pur mantenendo la stessa origine.

Nel corso dei secoli questa danza ha affascinato scrittori, studiosi ed intellettuali che venivano da ogni parte del mondo, per studiare ed analizzare la tarantella, come Goethe, Lamartine, Mme de Staël, che ad essa dedicarono molte ricerche e scritti a riguardo. Attanasio Kircher studioso e filosofo tedesco del XVII sec. nel suo scritto illustra l’Antidotum Tarantulae, cioè la composizione musicale che avrebbe fortissimi effetti terapeutici, che sarebbe fortemente legata ai culti dionisiaci.

Ancora oggi questo ballo continua ad affascinare per il suo ritmo frenetico e coinvolgente, divenendo liberazione e sfogo da ogni problema della vita moderna. Nei miei viaggi con il gruppo folk, ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere sia la Puglia che la Calabria, che custodiscono forse le piú belle ed antiche forme di pizzica e tarantella a noi oggi pervenute, sicuramente molto simili a quei ritmi ancestrali di migliaia di anni fá, che fortunatamente oggi ancora sopravvivono e vengono sempre piú valorizati e tutelati.
