Pensa di prendere informazione sulla famiglia originaria di Tony e viene a conoscenza di ogni particolare degno di riflessione. Si tratta di razionalità latitanti, di volontà bacate.L'atteggiamento della moglie sa anche di opportunismo e di paura per il giudizio del mondo.Francesca può commiserare questa donna ma non comprenderla. Ne condanna ogni suo comportamento. La ritiene colpevole più del marito per avergli consentito maltrattamenti e prevaricazioni; per aver subito patimenti mai alleviati e condivisi e che, comunque, gridano vendetta in un mondo civile dove la donna va rispettata anzitutto come persona.
