Das Ende der Welt. Eine tödliche Infektionskrankheit hat fast alles Leben auf der Erde ausgelöscht. Der siebzehnjährige Travis (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) und seine Eltern Paul (Joel Edgerton) und Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) gehören zu den letzten Überlebenden. Schwer bewaffnet leben sie in einem einsamen Haus im Wald. Getrieben von Angst und Paranoia versucht die Familie, mit ihren spärlichen Vorräten zu überleben, als ein verzweifeltes junges Paar (Riley Keough, Christopher Abbott) mit seinem kleinen Sohn bei ihnen Schutz sucht. Trotz ihrer guten Absichten, sich gegenseitig zu helfen, rücken die Schrecken der Außenwelt immer näher. Sie haben tiefe Spuren in den Seelen der Menschen hinterlassen, so dass bald Panik und Misstrauen zwischen den beiden Familien regieren. Denn jeder kann die Krankheit in sich tragen und zur tödlichen Bedrohung werden. Wie weit wird Paul gehen, um Frau und Sohn zu schützen?
