It is even more outrageous than that. The Jaguars are dysfunctional on and off the field.
So this guy was a mid-level financial analyst for the Jaguars from 2018-2023. They had a bunch of staff turnover in the finance and accounting departments such that his direct supervisor that was up till then checking his work left and wasn't replaced. Then in 2019 he became the sole administrator of the team's virtual credit card system.
Since they had a skeleton crew in key positions, no one was really checking any of the expense reports he filed.
I'm still utterly amazed internal and external audits didn't catch him. Even absent any of the normal internal controls that would be here to flag and catch this, he wasn't doing anything really sophisticated here. In a normal company, this would have been caught pretty quickly once something didn't reconcile or a budget was unusually off or by a second review.
He made it so the transaction totals matched, and just altered from the legitimate transactions, but the miscoding should have been picked up at least on the individual budgets. He would inflate legitimate transactions, bring forward future recurring transactions, and in some cases just make up transactions.
He claims that he had a gambling addiction and that the gambling losses piled up as he tried to win to make up the losses.
