Japan joins 'Garuda Shield military drills' for the first time

After talks with Joko Widodo, Fumio Kishida, the Japanese Prime Minister, said that Japan will participate in the Garuda Shield joint martial exercises in Indonesia. The exercise is part of Washington's and other regional allies' efforts to counter China's increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific.

This will be Japan's first participation in annual military exercises. The United States has stated that a pan would lend the Indonesian government 43.6 Billion yen ($318M) for infrastructure projects and emergency prevention. Jokowi also mentioned that Japan's self-defense forces will participate in the Garuda Shield joint military exercises.

Nobuo Kishi, the Japanese Defense Minister, said Tuesday that he had been helped in previous elections by members of the Unification Church. He is the latest ruling party lawmaker who has revealed connections to the group. According to investigators, Kishi, Abe’s younger brother, stated that he has been associated with a few members of the church and had received their assistance as volunteers.

Kishi was speaking at a press conference. He also claimed that he watched a video message Abe sent to an event in September of an Unification Church organization. The 41-year old also told investigators that his grandfather, Nobusuke Kishi (former Prime Minister of South Korea), had invited the group from Japan.
