Shot from a short distance : a near death experience.

This is my entry to the supernatural writing contest organized by @jerrybanfield.

I woke up to a sharp pain in my left temple and my vision was blurry. It took me a few minutes to recall the last event that took place before i passed out. I was in a room surrounded by unfamiliar faces in white coats and writing pads in hand as well as trolley of syringes and needles and bottles of medicines on it.

What was i doing in a hospital ward?

Oh! Now i remember. I had gone out with my friends the previous night at about 10.38pm ignoring all forms of warning from my instincts and intuition. I am the "Joseph" of my family, i dream and they happen sometimes exactly the way it was in the dream and at other times, in other forms but literally with the same outcome. I had had a dream where i was shot in the chest but did not die. In the dream, i didn't even bleed well, i was amazed but felt like superman but when i awoke, the thought of being shot alone sent shivers down my spine.

If i had told my mom about the dream, i was sure to get a bodyguard and perhaps a stalker on my trail but i love my freedom especially at school where i stayed in of the boys hostel, the more reason why i never told her. Well, we left the hostel to attend a friend's birthday party which was held outside the school premises to avoid restrictions by the school authority. The celebrant, kola (that was his name) was a rich kid and had made available his car for easy transportation to the venue. Some girls might have thought of us as big boys when they saw us enter an expensive car, i smiled like i just won a jackpot and my head was swollen with pride.

We left school and soon arrived at the venue, it was already hot in there. I got comfortable a bit when i saw few familiar faces of boys and girls from my school. Neglecting my personal norm to never get drunk, i gulped down a beer as if i was in a drinking competition. We all know what alcohol does to the body especially to a young man like myself who rarely touches it. I soon found myself dancing with Sandra, a hottie that i had always wanted to do naughty things with.
THEN IT HAPPENED...

I was still enjoying the music blaring out of the speakers and had my hands on Sandra's hips moving in sync with the rythmn of the song 'despacito' when a gunshot overwhelmed even the loud music. I had not noticed the effect of the bottles of beer i drank until when i tried to run. I fell down and only managed to get on my feets, sandra had disappeared into thin air.

There was great commotion now, everybody (except me i guess) was trying to exit the hall through any means available. Some really huge guys had blocked the entrance and fired more shots in the air clearly with the intention to make everyone still present in the hall stay still. After achieving that, we were ordered to walk out of the hall in a single line into a van that was waiting outside. This reminded me of slavery and i already imagined myself working on perhaps a cocoa plantation. Poor me!

We entered the van, 13 of us looking as pale as ghosts. The celebrant kola, was already crying like a baby, he must have wet his trouser (he was that mild a boy). Then they started off on a journey to the land of the unknown. All the men with guns were seated at the front and we the captives at the back. Then i noticed that the door of the van was slightly open and hanging a bit loose, i mustered all the strength i had in me and pushed hard against it and it gave way. I fell hard from the moving fan and hit my head on the tarred road. It was very painful but i had to get home alive, so i stood up and ran (or should i say limped) a few distance from where i fell that was when I heard a loud bang. Another gunshot, aimed at me from close range, thank God the shooter missed his mark.

But then something hit me from behind on my head and i fell face down. "Stupid boy, you want to spoil our show,eh?", a deep bass voice said and i heard the click from pulling the safety on a gun and i thought that was my end.
Then my saviour came, the police siren sounded not too far away, the man could no longer finish his dramatic kill and ran off. The last thing i could remember. As i recalled all these, my mom walked in looking both disappointed and happy. Such mix of emotions, I'll never understand.
