The prophet Isaiah, according to Christian thought, prophesied in many of his writings the arrival of Jesus. Isaiah, although he lived in very difficult times, he witnessed the siege of the city of Jerusalem by the tyrant Sennacherib, he was the prophet of hope. Isaiah prophetized a Jesus who would be the messiah, the redeemer of humanity, and who would come to establish a new pact with mankind; but who also would come to fulfill an older one, the pact made between the Lord and his beloved servant David through the words of the prophet Nathan: "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever" 2 Samuel 7:16.
And like Jesus with the Samaritan woman (John 4:1-26), Isaiah spoke to us about the free water of life, that true water that quenches all the thirst of man, metaphorically in the Bible, the water of life represents the knowledge of God, in other words, the contemplative life. Like most of the prophets, Isaiah called men to the common sense, to spiritual reflection, to that blessedness promised by Jesus.
Isaiah anticipated us with these words that Jesus would bring eternal life:
"Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!" Isaiah 55:1.
Isaiah also anticipated that Jesus would be a descendant of David:
"Give ear and come to me;
listen, that you may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David" Isaiah 55:3.
And this water of life for Isaias would attract another people, another Israel, but no longer according to the criteria of the flesh. Isaiah prophesied that the message of Jesus would reach all corners of humanity:
"Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations you do not know will come running to you,
because of the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for the has endowed you with splendor" Isaiah 55:5.
Isaiah with his prophecies about Jesus called men to seek with humility the ways of God that surpass all human knowledge.
