We stumble when we walk in the dark, when we have no light, when we are blind: "Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit", Matthew 15:14. In the gospels, the people who stumble are the ones without a guide, the ones who have no way. To practice sin, to practice the error, following concupiscence, is to walk without light in the gospels This is why Jesus teaches us a beatitude: "Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me", Matthew 11:6
Jesus calls us to live the faith according to the word of God, avoiding the heresies that lead us away from the path of mercy. Because this is how we walk in life with light: "Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ´I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.´" John 8:12
The bible explains to us that when we take an action there are two options: we are precise and exact, or we fail. To be precise and exact is to practice the truth: "But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light" John 3:21. Assertiveness is a fundamental problem of spirituality, because all our actions have a return: "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows", Galatians 6:7. The law of return punishes us more, when the error is greater.
Jesus explains to us in the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-9) the meaning of the true beatitude: to listen to the word, retain it and put it into practice with constancy.
The word of God is the wisdom engendered by the spiritual gift of counsel, the knowledge of the correct means of living. But this word needs the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability) to bear fruit.
When we live the words of Jesus with constancy, firmness and devotion we not stumble and we walk with the interior light to reach the true goals of man: the eternal life, the sanctity and communion.
Jesus blesses us with his teachings and the example of his life.
