Pentecost is narrated in Acts 2, it is fundamentally the fact that generates the birth of the church. The disciples receive the holy spirit in the form of tongues of fire.
The disciples are born again in Pentecost and receive a new infancy, the infancy of the spirit. Receiving the holy spirit has another name in greek: Gnosis.
In gnosis there is a change in the essence of man, God grants us his essence, the wisdom, to allow us to see the world with his eyes and understand the scriptures: "He opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures", Luke 24:45. The goal of the spiritual life is to reach the full likeness to God, that is to be wise as God is wise, and this is what disciples achieve in Pentecost, the spiritual maturity.
This is why Jesus describes the kingdom of god in parables, the parables describe the development of man towards his spiritual maturity . Jesus promises in numerous occasions the Holy Spirit to the disciples: "everyone will be salted with fire", Mark 9:49, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? Matthew 5:13.
Currently the sacrament of confirmation where the believer is declared an adult reminds us of the action of Pentecost. In the sacrament of confirmation are received the 7 gifts of the spirit as disciples with the tongues of fire.
The bible describes us Pentecost:
"When the day of Pentecost came, they where all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there where staying in Jerusalem God fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked; "Aren' t all these who are speaking Galileans?"...Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? Some, however made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."" Acts 2:1-4
