I have been reading the Bible for a long time, what I think of it as a holy book is of no consequence but among the many things I find very strange about it this has got to be the strangest:
This is from the book of Job:
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” 12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
So after this a lot of bad things happen to Job but he stands it and doesn't question God, so eventually the sons of God again visit him, of course including Satan and this time Satan says Job hasn't cursed God yet because he is healthy. So from then on Job is stricken with more than bad luck but also disease.
OK, what I want to point out are a few things that bother me. First and I didn't mention this before, Job lived in UZ, where is UZ? Nobody knows, seems this place disappeared a long time ago, so apparently this stuff is before Abraham but must be after the flood, mainly because of its placing in the Bible it is #18 in order, which I think must be chronological.
Second, what is Satan doing in God's presence? Wasn't he cast out of heaven after the first creation? At least that is what I have been led to believe, this book only proves that at the time Job existed Satan was accepted before God's presence and communicated with him long after I thought he was kicked out of heaven.
And third and most importantly what Is God doing accepting challenges from his underlings? And this is really tough because God knows what is going to happen so if you look at this carefully he is playing first of all with Job by making him suffer just to prove a point and then Satan because God knows what is going to happen so betting against him is just plain dumb. I thought Satan was way too smart and cunning for that.
And like this one there are many other stories in the Bible that unsettle me like in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, those actually scare me.
I would not like argue about the chronology of the book of Job, because historians do not really know. Historians do not know if it was a post-Moses or pre-Moses book. The books in the Bible are NOT in chronological order. They were organized in a semi-historical order. Still there are many poetic books that have no historical placement so they are just included randomly in the Old Testament.
This is what I do know of Job:
The book of Job is very similar to other "Ancient Near Eastern" texts around the Sumerian era. There are MANY books that play out a similar story like Job's; where a deity forsakes his servant and allows bad things to happen. The book of Job is probably a similar adaptation to the cultural stories of that time. So the story of Job was a very common story in its ancient near eastern context.
Note: there are also many "creation" stories similar to the Bible's one.
I like to think that the Bible is a book of ideas passed on to preserve a culture. The book of Job seeks to ask an age old question: why do goob things happen to bad people? why do bad things happen to good people?
I would not worry too much about if the devil can or not go to the presence of God. Since it is a book of ideas, I think they are just trying to illustrate a point.
