I think Jordan Peterson's commentary on political issues ranges from the inane to the outright ridiculous and stupid. Nonetheless, I find this case troubling. A professional regulatory body should not be able to penalize him for speech that is clearly outside any professional context. He pretty obviously is NOT practicing psychology when he expresses views - no matter how offensive or stupid - on various political and social issues on Twitter or in a podcast.
The fact that he lists his status as a psychologist in his Twitter bio and/or that that status adds some (perhaps undeserved) prestige to his utterances is not sufficient justification for regulators to try to restrict what he says. Ditto for claims that his statements might damage the reputation of the profession.
This isn't ultimately about Jordan Peterson (who, again, I have little sympathy for). It's about whether busybody regulators can undermine professionals' freedom of speech, including when we aren't even on the job.
