The fear of God is the beginning of spiritual life, it is one of the most important spiritual gifts even more than mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness, benevolence).
The book of Ben Sira, whose author was a teacher of wisdom, dedicates the beginning of his book to the importance of the gift of fear of God: "The fear of the Lord rejoices the heart, giving gladness, joy, and long life.", Ben Sira 1:12. The fear of the Lord is defined as constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability.
Spiritual gifts are lived because it grows, and just as a tree bears branches and fruits, gifts also bear fruit due to the Law of Return, the fruits of the fear of the Lord are happiness, joy and long life, the Bible clarifies.

Happiness is the prize for virtue, Aristotle explains, and the philosopher clarifies: greater is the virtue, greater is the happiness. Following this thought, we conclude that corresponds to the fear of God one of the highest degrees of happiness because the gift of fear of the Lord responds to the path to charity and wisdom: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom", Proverbs 1:7; also: "The fullness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she inebriates them with her fruits. Their entire house she fills with choice foods, their granaries with her produce. The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord, flowering with peace and perfect health.", Ben Sira 1:16-18.
Long life also corresponds to the fear of God, the fear of God is the ability to understand the difficulties of life without affliction, the emotional stability and meditation that comes from devotion to God allows the development of longevity (spiritual gift of immortality). This is why the devotees of wisdom are also called immortals: "To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.", Romans 2:7
