Trump twice said he never spent the night in Russia during the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. We know this is a lie. Why did he lie?

Trump’s stay was from from Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, through the following Sunday morning.

Why did he lie, and why don't his supporters care?
