The death sentence by a Sudanese court on a teenage girl accused of killing her rapist husband in self-defense staged a wave of indignation on Saturday, with human rights activists calling to save the young woman. On May 2, 2017, the three men held Noura Hussein while Abdel Rahmane raped her. The next day he tried again to rape her, but she managed to escape to the kitchen where she grabbed a knife. In the ensuing fight, Mr. Abdel Rahman succumbed to stabbings, reported Amnesty.
In April 2017, after finishing high school, the young woman had to move to her husband's home. But when Noura Hussein refused to consummate her marriage, her husband called her cousin to help her husband, Amnesty International's human rights organization said. At her trial in July 2017, the court found her guilty of intentional homicide after applying an old law that did not recognize spousal rape.
Noura is a victim and not a murderer. Noura was raped by her husband, the Sudanese novelist Hamour Zyada indignantly says on her Facebook page, as the hashtag #JusticeForNoura is circulating on the web.
"We must all come together to save Noura and fight marital rape, the way her family treats her is happening all the time in our community, we have to fight for it, writes Amal Habani, a Sudanese women's rights activist on Facebook. Sudanese, activists and women's rights organizations must unite "
The death penalty is the most cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, but the application to a victim only underscores the failure of the Sudanese authorities to recognize the violence they endured, said the regional director on Thursday. Amnesty International Deputy, Seif Magango.
In recent years, NGOs and women's and children's rights activists have stepped up campaigns against forced marriages, especially minors, a widespread phenomenon in Sudan.
