Fighting Anxiety In The Midst Of A Pandemic

Young adulthood is a stressful time, full of changes, and challenges. Stress can cause anxiety, anxiety can cause stress, and both can get in the way of life. Anxiety is a condition that can affect anyone. Even the most confident person you know may have suffered from anxiety. Recent research suggests that as man as 1 in 6 young adults will experience an anxiety condition at some point in their lives. This means that up to 5 people in your class may be living with anxiety. Whether that be OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), social anxiety and shyness, exam stress, worry or panic attacks. We all feel anxious at times, but for some people it can be severe. Anxiety becomes a problem when you experience symptoms nearly everyday to the extent that it interfere with daily activities such as going to work, school, or developing relationships. Here are some self-care tips to treat and overcome anxiety:

  • Try to get enough sleep every night. It’s hard to feel good when you’re tired. Sleep problems are a common concern for people who experience anxiety.
  • Try to be active everyday. Even a short walk or a 20 minute exercise can boost your mood and physical activities can help in coping up with anxiety.
  • Try to eat well. Avoid food and beverage that can trigger anxiety such as caffeine and grab some healthy food that can fuel you up all through the day.
  • Try to find ways to relax. Learning how to turn down the volume of anxious thoughts and feelings can help in managing anxiety. Think positive thoughts and do activities like listening to music, watching TV, and reading books to divert your attention.
  • Be mindful of other alcohol or drug use. Drinking alcohol and illegal drugs aren’t the solution in coping up with anxiety. It can actually trigger or worse it could be harder to manage in the long run.

Anxiety is a term associated with situations that cause people to be afraid, nervous, or worried- usually for an event that is going to occur in the future. Anxiety occurs when an individual is anticipating of an upcoming event and is afraid of its outcome. Being anxious in the midst of a pandemic is something no one could ever escape. Alongside with the stress of dealing with the new normal way of living.Though the physical symptoms of this so called anxiety attack could be terrible but as someone who have been battling over anxiety attacks since high school, I can definitely testify that those tips mentioned above are just some of those effective tips that are helping me cope up with anxiety. Anxiety can affect us all in very different ways. Experience of anxiety can vary greatly from person to person and no two people are the same. Still for me, prayer is the best weapon above all. It doesn’t just give soothingly calm feeling but it will also give you rest knowing that you are not alone because you can talk to God wherever you are and whatever situation you are in. It has been a great relief to troubled hearts and bothered minds. Anxiety disorder is very treatable and you should expect to feel better again. During these trying times, we need to be bolder and braver although we may be facing our silent battles. Keep on and remember you are never alone
