Frequent Black Outs in Nairobi, Kenya.

This is me venting. Sometimes I really get pissed off being a resident of Nairobi, Kenya. Hardly a month goes by without having black outs. Worse still, they are not forewarned, like no issue of notice and more often considered a normal situation. I work from home, practically everything I do is online. Internet access is my life blood, it doesn't happen when my wifi connection is out due to a power surge.

I have been in a black out for more than 16hours up until now. When you call the customer care people, all they do is take your address and ask you to be patient. It's really not one of my virtues when I have things to do. Not every household can afford power back up generators. I remember a time we were in a black out for three consecutive days. The food stored in the freezer goes bad, small businesses that rely on electricity can't do business.

The government does not realize how much revenue is lost due to power surges. Worse still, there has been numerous complains about overcharge in bills. Just because Kenya Power & Lighting Company is a monopoly does not necessarily mean that Kenyans have to be punished by being given substandard services. I am so fed up with this habit. Someone should be held accountable.

It is true that these blackouts can piss one out

they really do.

Unfortunately there are many independent power producers but only one distributor (Kenya Power), all the power generated is sold to Kenya Power, then it's sold to us and I don't see any chance of another distributor in the market soon, what we can lobby for is policies to protect against un-necessary charges (fluctuating token units) and compensation for loss of business or property due to power failures, or unstable power. It's a long shot but a start.

I wish this was actually implemented in the near future. nice recommendation

I've been in Nigeria for a month and I could kiss KPLC right about now. Normally when I don't have power there for like an hour I just tweet them and they act. 16 hours? How? Try tweeting them.

Well, I don't own a tweeter account, but my business does. Thanks and good to know.
