The crucifixion of Jesus is perhaps the most dramatic moment of the gospel, the four apostles John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke describe to us the situation. Jesus with his death on the cross seals a new covenant between God and humanity, the love to our neighbor must be taken to its last consequences.
And it is there on the cross where a condemned person finds salvation through the faith in Jesus. Entering the Kingdom of Heaven is a step of faith, that is why the Apostle Paul explains to us: "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Hebrews 11:6.
Jesus is the lamb and by his atonement, his sacrifice, all those who believe in him can overcome spiritual death and receive eternal life, like the thief who asks him to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. We are all sinners and in the face of Jesus, as the damned who accompany the Lord, we have to make a choice, we accept his kingdom or we reject it.
The Bible tells us how the repentant thief on the cross next to Jesus, receives the salvation of his soul:
"Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, ´Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.´ And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, ´He saved others, let him save himself if he is God's Messiah, the Chosen One.´
The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, ´If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.´
There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ´Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!´
Buth the other criminal rebuked him. ´Don't you fear God,´ he said, ´since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.´
Then he said, ´Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.´
Jesus answered him, ´Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.´" Luke 23:32-43.
