North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has made hundreds of people stand in freezing temperatures to hear his father give a speech - while he and his cronies enjoy secret heaters.
Attendees braved temperatures of 5F (-15C) to attend the 30-minute speech on the 80th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's death in 2011.
Guests stood out during the speech, revealing pictures of the event, many without gloves, scarves or ear warmers.
But reporters from NK News suggested that officials should take special care after spotting a large bunch of wires running under the red carpet on stage.
Correspondent Colin Swirko said the wires may have led to the use of heaters to keep the communist state's elite warm during the long speech.
The celebration of the Kim family dictatorship was held in the northern city of Samjeon on Tuesday and was part of the first national gathering since July 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the speech, North Korean official Ri Il Hwan praised Kim Jong Il for challenging 'US imperialists' and fighting 'the peak of anti-socialist madness in the 1980s,' state media reported.
The late leader provided a 'stepping stone' to current North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un and left a 'revolutionary legacy', Hwan said.
The incident took place on Tuesday, February 15, the day before the anniversary of Kim Jong Il's birthday on February 16, 1942, as is customary in North Korea.
The long-standing and unsubstantiated North Korean claim that Kim Jong Il was born in 1942 in a 'secret camp' on Mount Paektu near Samjeon was also repeated during the speech.
However, Soviet records indicate that Jong Il was actually born on February 16, 1942 near Khabarovsk in eastern Russia.
North Koreans paid tribute to former President Kim Il Sung and bronze statues of former President Kim Jong Il in celebration of Jong Il's 80th birthday on February 16.
Friends of the Kim family have also repeatedly said that Jong Il was born while his father, Kim Il Sung, the founder of North Korea, was fighting against Japanese colonialism in the state.
But Soviet records indicate that Il Sung did not visit North Korea until after the Soviet Union conquered the peninsula when the Japanese were defeated in World War II.
Samgyeon has been renovated in recent years on the advice of Kim Jong Un, who ordered officials to turn the city into a 'utopian mountain city' as a tribute to his father.
An evening ceremony as well as a fireworks display were scheduled to take place at Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square as part of the celebrations at 7pm on Tuesday.
North Korean gardeners are being sent to labor camps after the Kimjongilia begonia, named after Kim Jong-il for the late dictator's birthday, fails to bloom.
Local media reported that foreign diplomats still in the city had been invited to attend the ceremony as a sign of the Covid-19 easing of restrictions that had previously banned foreigners from attending fireworks displays in the capital.
