John Eckhardt Jr., known simply as Johnny One, was born to his twin brother Robert on August 27, 1911, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Johnny, unlike his full brother, was born with sacral agenesis, a congenital disorder that causes abnormal fetal growth of the lower spine. One often describes himself as “undersized from the waist down,” but in reality he has underdeveloped, unusable legs and feet that hide under custom-made clothing. As an adult, he is eighteen inches tall.

The twins had an older sister, Carolyn, and young Eck was educated until parents Amelia and John Sr. enrolled the boys in public school at the age of seven. Johnny was extremely popular with the other boys and although there was a lot of attention on his condition, he remained conscious of it throughout his life. When he was thoroughly questioned about whether or not he wanted to have a 'normal birth' he replied, “Why do I need legs? Then I have pants to press. ” He would often challenge his contemporaries “What can you do that I cannot do except tread water?” Namely.
Little Johnny One was able to walk on his hands at the age of one, long before his brother could stand. He was revered for his exceptional skills as an artist, painter, photographer, magician, and judy operator.
His mother was a minister by profession, and as a child he was often called to give sermons at his local church. Later one recalled: “I climb up on a little box and preach against drinking beer. Destroying sin and the devil! "
But the plans came to an abrupt end when Eck, aged 12, tried his hand at John Maxlan's stage show in 1923. Impressed, McAslan persuaded him to join his scene under his management, and Robert was accepted to take care of Johnny. The boys' parents signed a one-year contract, but Eck later reveals that the magician changed his mind by adding a zero for ten years in secret for the two to live as one.
Despite this treacherous hand, the boys somehow abandoned MacAslan and signed on with Captain John Sheasley. Although Johnny appeared as a single-o (a sideshow solo act), he often tried to perform with Robert.
During his time with the various evil carnivores, Extru became an acrobat. Usually it appeared in a tuxedo and his trademark one-armed wristwatch. Called by big names, it wasn't long before he was working with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. It took him to the 1931 Canadian Exposition in Montreal. There he was approached by an MGM talent scout. Contributed to the production 'Half-Boy' in Tod Browning's Freaks (1932).

Johnny accepted the part publicly, and he and Browning became firm friends. Often the young star sat next to the director, contributing to the structure of a scene at some point. He didn't really enjoy working with his various freaks co-stars, whom he described as "a happy, loud crowd." Childish, stupid and in a world of their own. ” He accused them of being “all Hollywood” wearing sunglasses and behaving ridiculously.
Johnny Eck's film career continued with three Tarzan films, in which he starred, but he signed on at Replay Believe it or Not. Ripley named him the “Most Remarkable Man Alive” at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair Auditorium for
preventing the loss of the family home to the Great Depression.
In 1937 the twins began working for illusionist and hypnotist Raja Raboid, with whom they would go on to create one of their most popular routines. In a twist to the semi-enchanted man, Robert will play a 'straight' volunteer, apparently replacing Johnny with the top half and Dwarf with the bottom half instead of 'splitting saws'. The stage cry “Come back! I want my legs back! ". The trick was dramatic perfection, shocking audiences at first and then reducing them to laughter, and successfully toured to packed houses on the East Coast.
