What causes and forms a solar halo?

Ice crystals in the atmosphere create the prism effect necessary to make a halo of sunlight in the sky. These ice crystals are contained in cirrostratus clouds that are 5 to 10 kilometers in the upper part of the troposphere. The shape and orientation of these crystals affect the appearance of the halo. Reflection and refraction control the shape of the sun's halo and the scattering of light waves affect the colors that are seen, similar to a rainbow from red on the inside to violet on the outside.

Some might think that sun haloes are a type of rainbow. However, while the two types are optical phenomena, they are different. Rainbows are caused by drops of water, while ice crystals create solar halos.
