Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) is a rare medical condition that makes a language native speaker speak such language in a different and foreign accent. It is most likely caused by stroke or a trauma to the brain.
People affected with FAS have alterations in the tongue placement, timing and intonation leading to an evident change in accent of the speaker.
A person with FAS can have the following symptoms:
1. Substitution of consonants
2. Distortion of consonants and vowels
3. Evading consonants
4. Insertion of “Uh” into sentences
5. Trouble pronouncing words with consonant cluster
This syndrome however has limited effect on intelligence and proper functioning of the person.
