More than four decades ago, American military forces pounded the Laos region as part of its aggression to Vietnam. Although the war is known as the Vietnam War, neighboring countries like Cambodia and Laos are not spared. The Vietnamese troops, known as the Vietcong guerrillas, used these two areas to infiltrate soldiers into the territory of South Vietnam.
The statistics recorded during the nine years of assault, the American military has carried out more than 580 thousand bombing missions in Laos. That means in that period the people of Laos will experience bomb terror once in 8 minutes for 24 hours non stop. The horror did not necessarily end, along with the Vietnam war.
Residents who live in almost all of the villages in Laos, still have to face another terrible reality of bomb blasts that failed to explode. To note that of all the bombs dropped, there are about 30% that do not explode. The bombs are scattered everywhere, some enter into the river, swamp, to farm land. Of course many are still active status.
Even more sad, sometimes the bombs explode at unexpected times, such as when fishermen are looking for fish in the river or when children are playing. So do not be surprised if the death rate due to bomb explosion remnants of Vietnam war in Laos is very high. In the past year alone there were 29 thousand people drifted due to bomb blast accident.
The bombs that failed to explode were known as UXO (unexploded ordnance). It is estimated that it takes tens to hundreds of years to clear UXO from the land of Laos entirely. While its existence makes the villagers' economy stagnate. This can happen because no one dared to cultivate agricultural land, even if the land is sold, rarely would want and dare to buy it.
