I welcome the debate. While the staggering death toll IS atrocious, you have a major flaw in your argument.
"Which was actually established originally, prior to the constitution, as a right for the colonists to form militias to fight the British, whom they escaped to begin a new country."
The colonists did not escape England to form a new country. We had colonies for almost 200 years before we decided to throw off the chains of tyranny and form the greatest nation the world had ever seen.
Great minds went in to form our declaration of Independence and Constitution.
"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." George Washington
"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations. ... The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home..If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be under the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." President James Madison
"When once a republic is corrupted, there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption and restoring its lost principles; every other correction is either useless or a new evil."
— Thomas Jefferson
"When the people fear the government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."
—Thomas Jefferson
These are just a few quotes. Tyranny is the enemy of freedom. The second amendment was established to protect our freedoms from tyrannical oppressors. Foreign or domestic.
The threat of tyranny is why our president has a limited term.
You mention your black friends and the "higher intelligent". With what I see on the news every day I am shocked that they would want the government to be the only ones armed. It surprises me that the majority of black Americans continue to vote democratic and do not take a more libertarian stance.
"Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty, and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to liberty." George Washington
In order to protect liberty from tyranny, it is the right of EVERY American to own the firearms sufficient to succeed, should it ever come to that.
Thank you for the debate. I wish you and yours safety and peace.
