After delivering the law in the book of Deuteronomy, Moses ended the book by explaining the blessings and curses that the covenant with God implies. Moses as a prophet warned the people of Israel about the importance of the faithfulness, the trust, and the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion), because these are the gifts of the heart that link men to God. The law of Moses is not only the fulfillment of a series of imperatives or prohibitions, it is also serving God and the community with joy and goodwill.
And among the curses, there is a very interesting one that refers especially to the hardness of the heart. With these words Moses expressed himself in the book: "The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. At midday you will grope about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue you" Deuteronomy 28:28-29.
Moses described a society gripped by confusion, anarchy, disorder, and private wars; quite the opposite of what is understood as a society aimed at peace and the common good. This description is very similar to what Aristotle made in his book Politics when the philosopher described a society governed by oligarchies.
It is important to understand that Moses warned about how dangerous it is to despise the fear of God, because when this happens men lose the common sense to solve problems.
And this was clearly seen in the kingdom of Israel when, after the Reign of Jeroboam, the religious schism with the Kingdom of Judah was imposed. Crimes and murders prevailed and several dynasties succeeded one another, creating great political instability in the Kingdom of Israel, until its definitive disappearance with the conquest of the Assyrian empire.
