Japanese stone oak, scientific name lithocarpus edulis, is a tall evergreen tree, often shrubby, with a spreading habit.

This tree can grow up to 9 meters tall and is highly cold tolerant.

The nuts are harvested from the wild for local edible use. However, they do not taste good, perhaps because of the tannins in them.
