Japanese laurel with the scientific name aucuba japonica, is a 1-5 m tall shrub native to China, Korea and Japan.

It is also known as spotted laurel, Japanese aucuba or gold dust plant (U.S.), and grows in rich forest soil near moist valleys, bushes, river banks, and moist rock shelters.

Leaves are opposite, broadly lanceolate, 5-8 cm long and 2-5 cm wide.

The berries have red seeds about 1 cm in diameter and are not liked by birds.
